I've had people with a blood sugar of 11 still talking to me so if they were in the 40's they might not know it. It does sound like something is wrong with the machine. Did you do the control checks on it and the high and low readings were correct?

I think it has to do with luck as well and not so much parenting. My husband was subjected to second hand smoke for 20 years and didn't have any major issues until he was in his 20's.
