Has anyone had an issue with eating disorders? Eating has always been a struggle with my son (14 w/cf and NOW CFRD!), but now he is almost refusing to eat. He is starting his third week of IV meds for a sinus infection. They sent us home after four days but he was drinking so little that he was dehydrated and started having crackles in his lungs with a cough. Also during this time (3 weeks) he developed CFRD. He ended up back in the hospital this week for fluids and insulin training.

He says he wants to feel better, but he is causing a lot of his own health issues by not eating or drinking. Its a vicious cycle. The doctors tell me he needs to eat and drink, but no one is giving us any advice on how.
We have an appointment w/ a counselor on Wed, but wondered if anyone else had run into this?

Thanks

I know that before I was diagnosed with CFRD I had no appetite whatsoever, and then once I was on insulin, my appetite came back right away. I don't know if this is the case. I dunno, have you thought of maybe a g-tube? Its an option anyway. If you don't mind my asking - is your son on IV's for a sinus infection?

Thanks Liz, I don't mind at all. Yes he is on IVs for a sinus infection. He is on two oral and a neb antibiotic already, so the doc felt this was the next step. Sounds like a lot. They also thought that the high sugar was feeding the infection, so once they control the sugar, the infection will get better. Hope so.
Maybe the insulin will help. He's pretty frustrated ( me too). He already has a g-tube which takes some of the pressure off, but of course we want him to eat and drink too. The g-tube really helps keep calories in him when he has a slow eating day. He hasn't lost weight at this point, but he should be gaining.

I'm glad to hear you felt better with insulin!

I find that when my sugars run high - I feel run down and have no appetite whatsoever. Once his sugars have stabalized somewhat, I'm sure he'll get some of his appetite back, if not all of it. Before I was diagnosed I had lost about 25 pounds, because of not really eating, and being sick. Hopefully with the insulin, he will feel somewhat better. Maybe the counselor will have some suggestions for you.

I would say that I was borderline anorexic for awhile, especially in college. My weight was one thing I could "control," so I did. I still took my enzymes (didn't want to be uncomfortable), but I was more than willing to let weight fall off, and didn't make concerted efforts to put it on. I still don't particularly enjoy eating, and never really have, but accept how imperative keeping my weight up is. I still hate the idea of putting on fat, and try to maintain a high protein, but relatively low fat, healthy diet.
