Another drug question.

Just wondering if anyone has been on Amikacin IV?

Apparently it's a med used to treat TB, eventhought I don't have that, they're hoping this will work to clear things up...and I actually believe it's working.

Last night my hearing went out in my right ear 3 different times for about 10 minutes. I'm wondering if it had something to do with Amikacin. Known side effects are kidney problems and vision loss, so just curious if anyone has any stories of side effects with it.

Thanks.

Kelly, AMikacin is known to cause hearing loss. Tell your doctor!

My kids were on Amikacin nebs (for the myco) for a year w/ no problems.

Wow, thanks for telling me!! I wonder if they made a mistake b/c they told me to watch out for sight loss and color blindness, not hearing loss. I've only been on it for less than a week. Oh brother......!

My 7 year old son has CF and NTM abseccus and was on and off IV Amakacin for the last 7 months. It has caused loss of all high frequency hearing. While he is on IV's he is monitored weekly for hearing. Right now he is on inhaled Amakacin and doesn't seem to have any problems with it. Good luck!!
