Antibiotics ....

I was just wondering if any of you guys had this issue.

Antibiotic wise I take Cipro as an oral when I have an infection and occasionally Bactrim. I usually take Zithromax three times a week all the time whether I have an infection or not.

I have come across some people kind of getting attitudey when they are prescribed the same stuff for infections. Almost like "see I take the same stuff you do so your "sick" isn't any different than mine"<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-mad.gif" border="0">. My fiance's mom(I have actually seen the meds in her possession when she was showing them to me and asking me about them - others just tell me they take them) has taken both Cipro and Zithro (250mg and not all the time normally 3 over a week or what have you). Several friends/acquiantances/family members have taken these as well or Levaquin and Bactrim. Sometimes they ask what meds I take and then say Oh Yeah I take THAT .. kind of to throw it in my face or whatever. I just want to smack them. First they ask what I take and second Zithromax was studied and brought into the market by the CFF I thought.

I know they need the meds too, and by all means they should take them, but don't downplay my health problems just cause your doc gave you the same meds I am on for months at a time in some cases if not all the time.

Sorry just had to vent <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">- that was bugging me today I was talking about meds with my step mother and she started with the Oh I take that and that when I have issues too and it isn't a big deal.

Okay rant over thank you for reading <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

i totally understand what your saying! although it seems like it doesnt happent to me that much, i still understand.

i told one of my teachers i was taking a steriod called prednisone and thats why i felt so icky, and she said "ohh, my brother had to take that for an eye problem once! so i understand!" and i just wanted to say "no, you dont. you havent taken it. and your brother probably wouldnt even understand! i feel like crap!"

what annoys me the most though is when my friends complain about their headaches or w/e and refuseee to take medication for it, and keep on complaining! that sorta doesnt have much to do with what this topics about, but i guess it can relate!

wow that turned into my own lil vent, so... summery: your not the only one, don't worry! and were here for you to vent anytime <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Yeah I know what you mean about people complaining about being sick, but not doing anything to get better. Kind of defeats the purpose of complaining.

I just read my post again and it seemed kind of silly and strange. I wasn't trying to pick at Kurts mom - she just popped out in my mind as taking the same meds I do. My step mom just gets to me sometimes. I swear for a healthy person she is the sickest person I have ever met lol. Every health problem I have ever had she has too. I had gallbladder problems so did she (funny thing she never went to the doc or had surgery though), I had/have issues with pluerisy (so does she), when I went to the ER a few weeks ago with the heart palps I talked to her the next day and she was having heart palps too (actually I think she said it was a heart murmur), and the list goes on. I swear I could make up an illness that didn't even exist and she would probably have it lol <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Hey Lindsey,

Sorry you are ticked off... I just wanted to add a different perspective.. I am glad that people don't have any idea the amount of drugs I take and the fact that I too am alway on an antibiotic at all times...

People's pain is relevant to their life.. I have a friend who doesn't have CF at all, she is really pretty healthy now, but she can relate to me because she gets bad headaches like I do, her body hurts like mine does.. etc.....

Also when someone says to me, oh I take that med too, I think to myself that they are trying to relate to me in some way. I see it as touching ( most of the time)...

I am sorry again that you got ticked off, I don't think I have ever seen you vent before.. Glad to see it.. Venting is great for the soul.

thats so stupid/immature/pathetic...need I go on?
Yeah, I've had people go on like that to me too. Usually they're self centered people and they get off on making their issues in life sound worse than everyone elses.
I remember my father growing up-who I have a very strained almost non existant relationship with unfortunately-he's like that with his entire family. He's the boy who never grew up, who needed a mommy his whole life, who should never have had kids....at the dinner table one night my father says to me, 'I've had more medical tests and stuff done to me than you have.' (my dad had a bad back injury in his 40s, so his life is worse than everyone else's since then.) Meanwhile my whole family starts to say, uh, dad-that's not possible. And he has a raging fit.

Id love to have Freud analyze that one-BUT, since then I've blocked out anytime people do that. its THEIR problem. Not yours.

People like to compared themselves with others especially those who like attention from being sick. What better way then to compare meds or symptoms with a chronically ill person! I would have said something like..."Its a good thing you have less chance of taking it as often as I do & worry about resistancentce leaving you with nothing to avoid lung damage!" A bit over the top yes, but one way to realize that altho the meds might similiar the whole rest of the situation is different! I am sure it was just one of those days & yes these meds are not just for CFers. They are for respiratory......unlike most our respiratory doesnt go away!

I do not recall having this happen to me where someone has irritated me but I had friends say lovingly, I had such a bad chest cold and I cannot imagine what you must go through. Or they say how do you handle all that coughing? Coming from a good egg I feel badly for them and I try and help them out if I can.

Lindsey, I would come back with a comment to your friends stating, I wish there were more powerful drugs than antibiotics but I do appreciate that you think of me even though you will never know what it is like to go through a lung illness. Then I would say you are blessed. That will probably make them think.

I do agree with Jennifer that some people might want to try and relate and empathize with you. I think it is all about their tone and sincerity
I have had very intelligent friends say really weird things to me when I was down and out and I wished I never called them but i understand that they have know idea what it is like to be really sick so I forgive their stupid comments. Then I also say if they are very selfish and do not care about you then stay away and find some real caring friends. I always like friends who were older than me or who really took their life seriouisly.

I completely agree with Risa and Jenn that sometimes people are just trying to relate and make that connection. I normally just let stuff go because I know that they have good intentions. For some reason My step moms comments just irritated me, who knows maybe I was just in a funk that day. The mind is a crazy thing lol. Well mine is anyhow.

Thanks so much for letting me vent to you guys. I appreciate it.

I say timiing is everything. Someone very close to me used the phrase do not be a FOFO (that means do not freak out before you find out) well at the time I was going on oxygen and was depressed. If someone said it to me now, I would laugh it off.

I agree with both sides of it. You need to use your judgment to see whether people are trying to be as helpful as possible and relate... or if people are being "you're exaggerating for attention and I'm just as sick as you." The former doesn't bother me. Usually I let it go. If it's someone I know well, I'll say something like "Ah yes, well same meds, very different reasons, but it's good to know I'm not the only one" or something similar. If it's the latter, and it's very obviously someone TRYING to be a jackass, then I'm usually quite rude back. You have to tackle this problem on a case by case basis. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Zithro has been on the market since 1993.

Pfizer did a study to expand the market which involved CF patients. It's use with CF patients is off-label, but studies show that it does help in CF people with inflammation.

But I feel ya about people being obnoxious. i can't stand when people complain that they have a cold. Cold season is the worst. I just want to smack everybody. CF is so much worse than a cold so I can't stand hearing people complain about their problems <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-sad.gif" border="0">

I get pissed when people complain about having to take antibiotics (often the same ones my son takes) and don't finish the whole bottle. There is so much antibiotic resistance now because of the people who stop taking them when they feel better. I don't want my son to be exposed to antibiotic resistance infections.

I didn't know that about Zithromax. I just know that everytime I have gone to the local CFF chapter here they show me the sheet with the list of drugs in the pipeline for the CFF and the ones that CFF has studied and approved and what has been brought to market and so on. Zithro was on there, that indicated to me that they kind of headed that up. Who knows, thanks though for straightening that out I thought for sure Zithro was there for us because of the CFF and related facilities.

A little off topic, but Sheli, I hate similar garbage. Everytime I see an ad for Lysol or Clorox kitchen wipes that kill 99 PERCENT OF GERMS BECAUSE YOUR KIDS NEED GERM-FREE SURFACES!!! I get pissed. Most healthy kids can stand a little germs, a little dirt. As long as it's not food poisoning, a little bit of bacteria is good for 'em. Every kids ingests a certain amount of dirt in their childhood. And it's people like that... germaphobes when there's no clinical reason to be (like an immunosuppressed child) that screw the rest of us who need drugs and substances that kill bacteria properly.
