CA (maybe other states too?) has a Ticket to Work program. Is anyone taking advantage of this? And, can you tell me more about it? Was it a pain to find work? How do you regulate your earnings?

Thanks for any info

Hi Sally - I'm in CA and using the Ticket to Work program, although I think it is a federal program so others outside our state may have more/better info too

I was receiving disability $ from both the state and the feds (SSDI and SSA I think - really confusing). When I went back to work, my state money stopped. However, I'm still receiving a portion of my federal money. I think this is because I only work part-time - my guess is that they regulate how much money you make to determine how much, if any, they will still provide you once you are able to work. Also, you should receive your FULL SSA amount for the first 9 months you are working - this is like your trial period to see if you can handle it, etc. You should also continue to receive medi-Cal (if you were on it) and Medicare indefinitely. In fact, I have employer provided insurance, but I still have Medicare and Medi-Cal as a back-up (and GHPP too, because my income is low enough that I still qualify). The only downside to this is that they all fight with each other over who is supposed to pay for what - better to have that problem than no insurance at all though.

I went through the CA Dept. of Rehabilitation to find a job and get started working. They took my "ticket to work" piece of paper thingy, so they get some kind of credit for that I guess. I have mixed feelings about them. The first time I used them in Monterey County, they were completely useless (although they did pay for me to take some college classes so that was nice). Here in Sacramento, they were awesome and found me a job right away. And more importantly, an appropriate job. I'm not sure where you live exactly, but I'm happy to help you find an agency to go through (it doesn't have to be a state agency like dept. of rehab). If you have any other questions or want some help in your search, PM me.
Good luck!!
