Are they all this clueless on CF?

Ok, my son & I have been in the hospital since Monday evening for a tune-up & testing.

He went NPO from Mon bedtime until 3PM yesterday so they could sedate him for a PICC, and then again from 4AM-11AM today for a chest CT.

This means we have missed at least 3 meals and countless snacks in the last 2 days, and the nurse was just honestly surprised he has lost a whole 3/4 lb since monday. She asked me if I was making sure he was eating enough <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-confused.gif" border="0">

Needless to say, we are eating a ton as being six and stuck in a hospital there is not that much more to do, but I kind of assumed if you don't feed him for a couple of days he is going to lose weight.

Sorry for the vent, just a bit annoyed to be asked if I was feeding him properly!

I think I'd be apt to complain to a higher up about it. In the future to try to get younger patients in for procedures earlier so they're not starving/losing weight.

I know my MIL, a retired RN, managed to get hospital policy changed after my husband, who was 3 at the time had to wait almost 24 hours NPO prior to his tonsilectomy, plus he never got the "kiddy cocktail" to calm him down prior to being wheeled down to the OR. She went right to the hospital adminstrator. She thought she was going to get fired, but later was thanked by her supervisor and other staff members because they had complained for years and nothing had ever gotten done until then.

From experience, "He who yells loudest" for one thing and the other thing is to go to the administration is the best way to get results.

Unless you are lucky enough to get a "CF" nurse, they are clueless, even the more experienced ones. I can't tell you how many times I was left trying to figure out how in the world they ever made it through school to become a nurse. I know it is not easy to get into nursing school let alone make it through, I suppose depending on which school, and if they have a BSN verses a RN so the only thing I can think of is that they were/are book smart but don't know how to apply it. There are a lot of really good nurses but it seems we always get at least one every admission that leaves me wondering how in the world did they become a nurse.

LOL, Keep venting if you need to, it is better than killing someone, which has sounded pretty good to me at times when in for tune-ups with my son.

I agree with you that many nurses do not know what they are doing and I have had some that have been totally clueless. But, keep in mind these nurses are working too many hours for not enough pay, and are expected to know everything about every disease. I had a nurse who made a huge mistake with me and came in crying telling me how long she has worked, and how hard she tries. It really did make me see them in a different light.

This is why it is so important to be an advocate for your child. A lot of times it is up to you to get the right care for your child. It stinks that we can't trust hospitals these days
