Back Aches

I have been having some aches & pains across my back between by shoulder blades & wondered if anyone else w/ CF has these types of back aches often. Also, when I cough, my ribs hurt & I wondered why this is so? I thought I had heard somewhere that as time & infections go on, that our lungs become enlarged & wondered if mine are just really close to my ribs now & when I cough they are pushing against my ribs & that's why it hurts. Has anyone else heard this? I know you can't always believe everything you hear, so wondered if anyone else had heard the same thing.

it could be pleurisy. its like a constant sharp ache. or it could just be a plug of mucus. either way see your doc. they might want to do xrays if its been an ongoing thing.

Sometimes I get sharp pains in my back, usually when I take a breath. It takes a couple of days to go away completely. My doc said it was pleurisy, it can happen when an infection gets worse, etc.Martha 29, CF

Hi,I think, all that "aching" is just normal, when you cough a lot for years. For the coughing you need a lot of muscles, and the muscles get shorter or harder because of the constant distress...Uli,42

I hope you feel much better soon. There could be so many reasons why you are hurting. Perhaps you are sleeping incorrectly? Sometimes you can get a pain on side and the other side is really where the pain is coming from. I would never take pain pills unless it is absolutely necessary. Try stretching slowly and perhaps you can loosen up some of the kinks and each day you can stretch and before you know it you can become stronger and the pain will no longer be there. Pain is always a sign of something I would not ignore it. IF you are really in pain when you breathe then I would definitely contact your doctor immediately. Intracoastal muscles surrounding your ribs can be quite painful and can hurt for days. You could have twisted the wrong way or coughed too hard in the morning when first waking up. I would definitely stretch slowly if you can each and every morning but make sure you are fully awake before stretching.

Thank you for all of the responses. I guess I figured that all of us had back ache issues. I will contact my Dr & tell him about it.<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
