Biking

Hadn't biked in a while, but there is a place in Tampa not far from me called Flatwoods park. It's a big oval nicely paved woods track that snakes through some very old pristine florida land. It is 7 miles long. I wasn't hauling severe a*s or anything, but I was going to see how quick I could get the 7 mile track done at a nice comfortable clip, but at a cardio/sweaty speed.

I stopped halfway through to get some water at one of their four watering stations that they have, and made a phone call, so that probably took nearly 5 mins off my time or a little more.

I ended up finishing the track in 30 mins even. Not bad at all for a 35 year old CF guy. I would have went around again but I want to go see a movie. When more of us go biking there or we roller blade, we have gone around 3 times several times, but mostly stop at 2 times around (14 miles). BTW this was on a walmart special bike, not a nice haulin booty 10 speed.

So do any of you guys bike? If it didn't cost so much, i'd like to get a nice racing 10 speed, but I always get "sore a*s syndrome", even on my current seat which is angled properly, is a jelly cushy seat, with another jelly cushy insert.

i used to but since moving out of my parents house into a small apartment in a different city i have no room for my bike... which is a shame since i got into it and had a great bike and all.. in west virginia, we have mostly mountains and hills so any ride is a great workout...

I used to bike quite a bit with my friend back in high school. He lived on a farm and had some crazy trails we went on. He was quite a bit more fit than I was, well more fit then most normal people, so it was a struggle keeping up with him. I loved it though.

Since moving to Toronto, there is a bike path that goes all along the lake to my work. i think I'm gonna get a bike and start biking to work. It's quite the ways, but i think it will be so worth it. It's almost worth buying a really nice bike though. It makes a huge difference, especially if you are planning on using it for primary traveling.

You could get a decent second hand racing bike for like $500. Look into it. I find it a lot more exciting than running...and a bit easier, cause when you're tired you can pedal a bit slower, and it doesn't look like you are going nowhere <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-tongue.gif" border="0">

I mountain biked a little bit when I moved to Mammoth Lakes, and it was a serious work out. I haven't been in that routine for a few years. There have been other things I've enjoyed more. Sadly to say, today my legs wouldn't take me too far. My husband used to ride *up* the mountain trails and roads, which I cetianly never was a part of. So biking for me dwindled a while back. But your story riding on that trail sounds great. Keep it up.

I grew up on a farm in Pennsylvania. I used to bike almost every day after school. And looking back, its amazing the stamina I had. I dont have a bike now, and dont really have an area to do it.
But I do occasionally take high intensity spinning classes. The kind that simulates uphill and downhill. They're great. Not as hard as real biking, but still very intense cardio workout. I love them, and surprisingly I kept up really good with the class.

Sean,

Your butt hurts because your saddle is too squishy. You need a firm saddle for your butt bones to lift the sensitive parts off the saddle. The soft seats are actually more painful in the long run. Lisa-Treehugger

Hey Sean -

I've been away from the boards for a few days - glad I saw this one!

I bike!! In fact, my tag (cdale613) is in homage to my road bike - a very nice Cannondale six-13.

During the warmer months I ride my road bike a lot - Last summer I rode in the Seacoast Safari for CF - a 150 ride to raise money for the CFF. It was a great event, and very scenic ride. It took me awhile to build up to 150 miles in two days, but I managed to finish. When I started training I could barely go for 15-20 miles.

Biking is expensive, but there are some deals to be had on ebay, etc. if you know exactly what you are looking for.

For anyone else interested, or has family interested in biking for CF, here is the site for the 2006 seacoast ride: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.jeknavorian.com/cf/

There is also a century ride for CF out in Colorado - hopefully I'll get to do it one day!
