My son who is 18 has just informed me that he has been have bouts of redish brown urine. He doesn't seem to have any other symptoms other than this. Any ideas? I am going to put a call into the doctor but he happens to be visiting his grandma 100 miles away right now

Hey Michelle,
I've not personally had this problem, I am a pro when it comes to bleeding lungs though! I wonder if he's been on any antibiotics lately. I know the dr's always check my liver function (through a blood draw) because meds take thier toll on the liver, since it filters practically the whole body. I know my lungs bleed (totally different issue) because of localized infection so perhaps, this could be true with his body, only different location.
Good luck!

reddish brown urine with or without pain can indicate some sort of liver or kidney function problem, which can be common in CF. If he is having pain in association with urination it might be a urinary tract infection. In either case he should signifigantly increase his water (pure water!!!) intake and visit a doctor. In rare cases, it can be associated with food or medications (like pyridum for a UTI turns the urine brownish/orange) and there are a few others that do that as well. But definetly have him visit a doctor for a urine test.

Hey, I am a 24/M with CF and about 4 months ago I had the same thing happen. I had no back pain and was cleared for a kidney infection, but I did see a Kidney Doc and was put on a pill called Diovan along with a round of Cipiro and it cleared right up. Good to have him checked though. Hope this helps.

Also like the last poster said, drink lots of water and cut back on soda if he drinks them.

Thank you everyone for your replies. I call the doctor and he ordered an urinalysis. It came back showing definte blood in the urine. I now have to take him back and have an urine culture along with some blood test. I guess we will wait and see

Almost a month later, we finally have our answers. Seems that Cory has kidney stones and some very large ones. They are causing some minor blockage and some pain so they have decided to remove them. He is in the hospital now so we are hoping to do it while he is here
