Bowel Obstruction

What are the signs of a bowel obstruction in a young child (age 6) and how is that different from a child who is just very constipated with a large amount of stool? Sorry for the question but I'm waiting for a call from the dr after dd's x-ray yesterday and thought I'd ask.

My son usually gets severe pain in the stomach, can't keep anything down, starts to vomit. They can also have an obstruction and still have a loose stool. It is very painful for him and he gets about twice a year.
