Can't catch a break

M got home from the hospital Wednesday. He had 8 teeth removed, 8 teeth crowned and 1 root canal, so major dental work. Pulmo who discharged him sent him home with 2 days worth of pain meds. Meanwhile, he's falling apart at the 3 hour mark from what he claims is break through pain.

He can't take ibprofen right now because his platelets are low as is his Hemaglobin. They are always low, its apparently normal for his liver disease. But, because he had dental work done, they said no ibprofen during recovery.

Normally, his liver doctor says absolutely NO Tylenol because of his advanced liver disease. For this post-op recovery, we have nothing left but Tylenol options. Thus why he was sent home on Loritab.

So, today, he has a follow up with the family doctor. We noticed his belly is starting to swell last night and it was really swollen by this morning. I couldn't get a pair of button up pants around his belly and its taunt.

Initially, we were concerned about acitates or the second option with M is another bowel obstruction.

So, family doctor does an abdominal x-ray. Big brother had to go back and hold his hand, because mommy is still 9 months pregnant and still can't enter an x-ray room and Daddy didn't come with us for this appointment.

Turns out, he's got a spot in his large intestines. Doctor says it looks like he swallowed a pearl necklace. They didn't run any testing with contrast in the hospital, and there's no way contrast from his Upper GI on 10/1 is still inside him.

Nope, the verdict is that the narcotics have slowed his large bowel motility. And, since he's already had 3 or 4 bowel obstructions, guess what we get to cut out? The Loritab. He now gets to recover from major dental surgery with nothing but Tylenol unless its significant pain. Still can't use the ibprofen. And, if it gets worse, we have to call back immediately because family doctor will send him into Children's for his GI to take over on a possible bowel obstruction. He warns me that bowel obstructions can come on VERY fast and this is Friday, so to watch him VERY closely through the weekend.

As a precaution, we also cut out his pectin. So, he's on high dose IV antibiotics and now he can't even have his pectin which is the ONLY thing which prevents the constant diarrhea.

Somebody just clear a path from him to the bathroom now, cause that's all he's going to do without the pectin...though apparently on the bright side that's what he NEEDS to be doing right now.

No narcotics. No pectin. If they tell me to cut out the probiotics I'll probably pull my hair out! But yeah, the verdict is that he may be trying to get another bowel obstruction. As if he has enough left to survive another one!

Guess is a good thing he has an appointment with his GI next Friday afterall.

Those narcotics do a # on the bowels. I get constipated instantly & I have never had an obstruction.

I wish this could all pass more smooth for all of you. It just doesnt seem fair that such a little guy has to deal with so much.

HUGS to y'all!
