The average onset of CFRD is between 18-21 years of age, but that's
a very narrow window. Just like everything else, this is a
generalization and not the rule. CFRD is more likely to show up in
patients who already exhibit pancreatic insufficiency.
Additionally, periods of "transient" diabetes can occur
when undergoing treatment requiring prolonged steroid use (e.g.
prednisone) or TPN.
When you ask about cepacia, do you mean B. cepacia or P.
cepacia?

B. Cepacia can occur at any time, however, since it is a lower
respiratory infection, it is more prevalent in patients who have
either: 1) experienced numerous episodes of pneumonia and 2) are
post adolescent. Since each subsequent lung infection and pulmonary
exacerbation makes it more difficult to fight infection, it stands
to reason that eventually, the lungs are more susceptible to the
opportunistic B. Cepacia.
Statistically speaking, B. Cepacia can dramatically reduce the life
expectancy of a person with CF. Some documentation reports that it
cuts the life expectancy in half.
