Cepacia Statistics

Just wondering if anyone knows about the statistics of pwcf getting cepacia? Or do you know, can you get it at any time throughout your life or is it more common to get before a certain age?

Isn't it true that getting CFRD is more likely before a certain age, or no?

Curious. Thanks.

The average onset of CFRD is between 18-21 years of age, but that's
a very narrow window. Just like everything else, this is a
generalization and not the rule. CFRD is more likely to show up in
patients who already exhibit pancreatic insufficiency.
Additionally, periods of "transient" diabetes can occur
when undergoing treatment requiring prolonged steroid use (e.g.
prednisone) or TPN.
When you ask about cepacia, do you mean B. cepacia or P.
cepacia?

B. Cepacia can occur at any time, however, since it is a lower
respiratory infection, it is more prevalent in patients who have
either: 1) experienced numerous episodes of pneumonia and 2) are
post adolescent. Since each subsequent lung infection and pulmonary
exacerbation makes it more difficult to fight infection, it stands
to reason that eventually, the lungs are more susceptible to the
opportunistic B. Cepacia.
Statistically speaking, B. Cepacia can dramatically reduce the life
expectancy of a person with CF. Some documentation reports that it
cuts the life expectancy in half.
Yes, I was asking about either B. cepacia or P. cepacia. I didn't actually know there were two kinds.

Pseudomans cepacia is the same as Burkholderia cepacia. B.cepacia is the older name it is known by. Aquiring cepacia can be done at any time no matter how mild your cf is. I got it when i was about 31 with mild cf, and very high pft's ( 99 - 100%). I got it the first time i was in the hospital for a sinus surgery. There are quite a few different types of cepacia, ....Here s a link to some great info on cepacia.........................................

Although the two names P. cepacia and B. cepacia are used almost interchangeably, B. cepacia typically refers to only B. cepacia genomovar I. Prior to 1984, P. cepacia and B. cepacia were both used to identify the B. cepacia complex. Confusing, I know.
