CF and Asthma

I've been noticing alot of people on here mention that they have asthma with their CF. What I want to know is how did you figure this out? Aren't asthma and CF similar in what they do to the lungs (constrict breathing)?

I'm curious because I get so SOB with everything now and it is the tightness that gets me. But there doesn't seem to be a lot of mucus in there - at least none moving around that I can get out!

Thanks!!

I had thought that all CFers have asthma, but my CF dr told me that some have a stronger asthma component than others. I know I have a strong asthma component mostly because the drs have told me. I get wheezy very easy. I get confused because of the bronchiectisis. When I breathe in but can't get much to breathe out I don't know if it's the bronchiectisis, which I've heard can make that worse, or if it's asthma. But then when I use my Combivent it often gets easier and those times I know it's the asthma making things worse.

I doubt this has helped you one little bit!!!! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"> Hopefully someone else will come on here and explain things more scientifically for you! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Almost all asthmatics have pretty severe allergies.......

If you feel you have asthma, get a skin test for allergies (not blood IgE). it should be thorough and should take about 6 hours, two days in a row (total of 12 hours).

Hi,

I have CF and asthma. What tipped my doctor off in the beginning was me mentioning that I cough alot and get wheezy when I'm around strong perfumes and when it's really cold out. He then put me on some asthma meds for a few months and compared my PFT's before and after. Sure enough, there was a large enough difference for him to make the diagnosis. My chest gets very tight without the meds and I also tend to be more wheezy than productive. Ask your doctor to let you try out some asthma inhalers (I have Symbicort). I noticed a difference IMMEDIATELY. The tightness just disappeared. Good luck!
