CF and drinking alchohol

Last night I was in the chat room and alot of CFers were talking about drinking and getting drunk. Are these people not smart enough to know how bad that is for their pancreas? I don't know I guess I'm old school. They said I wouldn't live to see my 1st birthday and 40 years later I'm still kicking deaths ass. Are people with CF taking for granted that the median age has risen so much over the last 40 years that they think they are invincable now? i don't know but wait till they have a couple bouts of pancreatitis and the'll snap back into reality.

Just to clarify, the two people drinking in the chat were Mary and I. Mary and I = no Cf. No Cf = drinking okay.

Well-u can do all the drinkin u want Allie baby-lucky duck.

But-I've come across some cfers who drink alot too, and it's their business. If they do it for social reasons, they want to feel numb, or just b/c they like the taste whatever. But my personal opinion is that heavy drinking cf or no cf is not good for you. Then with cf in the mix it's really not good for you! But, people will do as they do, and to some-the social benefits are worth it for them.

I personally am trying to do everything I can to save this overworked liver of mine. Alcohol is also a depressant-and not too good to mix with the many meds many of us take. I also don't need anything else to act as a depressant to me. It interrupts my sleep pattern, and I always feel tighter in the lungs the next day if I've drunk alcohol.

I have kinda a different outlook on this topic. I mean dont get me wrong I think that people with CF should be more careful then others but I have CF and I drink. Im in college and I like to go out and party sometimes and I think that is ok. If i am not feeling good I wont drink and when i do I am always careful to vest befor and after I go out so that my lungs are ok. It kinda tears me in both directions, on one hand I think that yes it is probably worse for me and sometimes it makes my lungs hurt the next day but at the same time I try not to let having CF get in the way of me having a normal time in college.
I think people with CF should be careful with all of the meds but I really think if you are careful about things that its your deal.

I agree with the last post. I drink every weekend because I am 24 and that is what all my friends do. yeah it is not the best but i try and do my nebulizers before i go out. i feel that if i let CF rule my life then why is it worth it. I take offense to the person that says that we are stupid enough to drink because it is a personal opinion.

If you don't drink, that's fine but don't call those who do stupid. everyone handles it differently and we should not judge.

if i choose to do that it is no one's business by my own

I wasn't judging, I totally agree with you guys, Ry drank too. I just wanted to clarify that it was because two non Cfers were drinking that this all got started lol.

For years I drank myself silly & I have epilepsy in addition to my CF. I am surrounded by a world of alcoholics & know the pros/cons to it. I have since stopped drinking for the most part. I no longer like the way it makes be feel during & after. It dehydrates me too much & takes forever to bounch back. In addition to the CF I have a personal anti drinking thing since my oldest nephew was killed in a drunk driving accident, but I dont lecture people about their drinking UNLESS they try to drive after dong so. Just like a smoker or anyone else that does anything that is harmful to their bodies....lecturing wont work. In todays society if you dont know drinking can hurt you then you probably dont care or you cant stop. That being said....CHEERS

Well I was in the chat room for a bit too - I know the pros and cons of drinking. I am almost 29 and I have been drinking socially for at least 15 years - starting in high school. Socially=on social occassions. I am not sitting down at the bar pounding them down night after night. Yes, maybe this will adversely affect me - but maybe it won't. You just can't say - for now, it is something i enjoy doing and I am not going to stop doing it, and thus far I have had no ill effects from it. If I pay for it later, then you can say "I told you so" and if I don't...well then I guess I'll be one of the lucky ones, won't I?

So far, I've noticed the more sensible CF'rs who posted here are aware of how CF affects thier bodies and acts accordingly.
I also was an occasional drinker around 24, but by 28, the doctor in Japan indicated my liver was not doing good (which was actually a suprise to me), and insisted beer and other alcohol should be avoided. Despite that, I wanted to become a connousur in beers while in Japan because I didn't have a car anymore, and frequently refrained from drinking in the states because I often would not drink if I was going to end up being the designated driver.
But, the ex-wife had made a big deal about my drinking. So, I only drank when she wasn't around until I reached my late 30's, when I noticed how bad I felt after drinking only one beer the night before. So, I made it a practice not to drink if I wasn't feeling good that night.
Even now, I haven't had a beer (Though I'd like to have one) since I've been fired and now become unemployed. However, realizing that there is non-alcoholic beer here, and that I had been drinking it before, I might actually do that! I can still catch a slight buzz from non-alcoholic beer!!
So, anyone wanna join me in an O'Doulles? (or two, or three?)

your lungs aren't the promblem with drinking it's your pancreas you have to worry about. I was in a fraternity in college and I drank until i had a couple of bouts of pancreatitis. The Dr. told me that if I kept drinking it would continue to damage my already sub par pancreas and could even kill me so I quit when i was 19. 19 was the legal limit to drink in Alabama in the early 80's.

sue i never called anybody stupid. i said if you have CF and you drink you are doing nothing but harm to your pancreas. I was just expressing my opinion becauase of past experiences and from what my 2 Cf Dr.s have told me and my bouts of pancretitis. It's nothing personel or judgemental just an opinion.

Do you also have to avoid alcohol with some of the medication you take? My daughter is only 2 years old at the moment so doesn't even know about alcohol! But what's the score when you're older?

My doctors know that I have the occasional drink - a glass of wine here an there, a cocktail once and a while, and maybe even a few shots. My pancreas hasn't seen damage yet. That being said I'm not saying that it can't happen, but my doctros are fine with my drinking in moderation. Its not like I go out and get hammered everynight or weekend - I'm not 20 anymore.

I have a problem with this thread. I can see that you went into multiple threads and posted invites to chat. threads that had nothing to do with "chat" so then what? You have people in there chatting with you and the next day you start a thread saying you think the way they live their life is dumb? Obviously I wasn't in chat with you. I just stating what it looks like from my perspective.

Are you saying that us CFers who drink once in awhile are in dream land? I sure hope not. That's very presumptious of you, and a very judgemental statement. Sorry, but I just went back and re-read your thread, and must have missed this comment.

No, you didn't call us dumb, but you did say that we weren't smart enough:

This is going to sound dumb from the person who is just graduating nursing school, but I thought CF pancreatitis was from mucus plugging up the pancreas and the enzymes being trapped inside, so the pancreas starts to digest itself which is where the pain is from... I didn't think you could get pancreatitis from drinking a small to moderate amount of drinking???

Anyone that I saw with pancreatitis in the ER was a major heavy drinker for years...

Also, Ricky, I think it is fine that you don't drink, I personally don't drink hardly ever, but I would drink more if I went out more or was around other people more.... It is up to you what you do with your body, don't judge other people for what they do.. as long as it isn't hurting someone else.
