CF and mineral supplements

Hey all,

I was just wondering if any of you take any extra mineral supplements. I know that you take you adecks as a vitamin, b ut do you also need to take minerals too?

I mean cf'ers also lack minerals, as i have been told but no one has ever suggested to take any supplements. This is a new ? i will pose with the cf docs at our next clinic appointment.

Also, the reason for my asking is because i have a friend with a cf toddler who is on mineral supplements, and has her blood tested for mineral levels once a year. These tests also cost lot's of money and it is also not done through a cf clinic, rather than a peadiatric/natropath(s/p).

Any info would be great!

Hi there,

I have taken Selenium supplements in the past and am currently taking Zinc, Magnesium and Potassium supplements.

I take 50mg of the Zinc daily and 99mg of the Potassium daily.

I am not sure of the amount of Magnesium I take daily as it is a mixture that dissolves in liquid. It is made by Natural Calm - I drink 2 mugs each day - morning and night and with each mug I put 1-1.5 teaspoons of the magnesium mixture.

I know I have read that CFers have deficiencies in Selenium, Magnesium and Zinc along with several other minerals - that is why I started taking them or have taken them in the past.

As for the Potassium - I have had in recent months issues with elevated heart rate/heart palpitations - one episode sent me to the ER - when I spoke with the doc about it he said that my potassium levels were low and that could cause heart palpitations. Also the doc said that Albuterol can leech the potassium from your blood causing a drop in your potassium levels. Since I have started taking the Potassium (about a month ago now) I have not had any episodes of heart palpitations - even slightly - which is great as I was getting them if not daily every few days.

Sorry for the long reply - but I wanted to say why I was taking what I took.

I take a Lot of supplements. Many geared towards adreanal support. I can list them all if you really want me too. but the general ones, I take magnesium for muscle cramps, calcium cause i'm female and a teen, I don't take extra potassium cause it makes my heart go wonky, zinc just for fun and then all the other ones that I cant think of off the top of my head.

Be well.

I take magnesium (mainly since every time in the past few years( twice) i was in the hospital they would give it to me after a blood test saying my level was low). I also take L-Lysine, Glutathione, Vitamin B-Complex, E, C, Viactive Calcium chews when i have them. I know some of these arent minerals but i figured i'd add them in anyway.

I would be careful with iron supplements if I were you. It's medically proven that patients with pseudomonas have lower levels of iron because the bacteria feeds on it. If you put more iron in your body it just feeds the infection and helps it grow.

Just recently found that out when my kidney docs were freaked out about how low my iron levels were... they're clearly not used to seeing CF patients!
