CF and Pregnancy

I was wondering if anyone could answer a question I have about the
use of antibiotics during pregnancy. For the cf moms that have had
children. Can you please tell me which antibiotics are considered
safe to use while being pregnant? I am wondering this because
I am considering getting pregnant and am doing my research. I am
mostly wondering about tobramycin. That is the one I mostly need
when I am ill. Thanks for your help!!!

where you found that because I would like to look up the other
antibiotics that I take also. I love this forum I find out so much
info from everyone here!!

I was pregnant when TOBI first became used back in 1998 -- my regular doctor was unavailable so I saw one of the fellows in clinic. She told me that unless I did TOBI I would end up with a much more horrible infection and that it was my only "hope" for being ok and able to breathe during my pregancy.

I was only 4 1/2 months pregnant, so I asked if TOBI had been tested -- she said no but that it was my only option. I held off and called my OB/GYN. He wasn't sure of its safety, so he researched and called me back -- at 8 pm the night before Thanksgiving! He said his research revealed that it is virtually sure of causing deafness in the fetus. He then suggested I try a much lower dose antibiotic, and that did the "trick" -- while it did not make me "completely" better, it helped make me breathe far better and feel much better.

I believe the drug was Ceftin, and at another time, Amoxicillin. Hope that helps -- but definitely talk with your doctor. Good luck! <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-happy.gif" border="0"><img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

many people have used TOBI while being pregnant - not tobramycin but Tobi. Taken into the lungs it doesn't become systemic and penetrate the fetus where Tobra is IV and would definitely reach the fetus.

I am being followed by high risk OB in Philadelphia and they said I could be on TOBI.
