Hi
The clinic worked out the bolus and basal dose for my son's pump.
Basically there is a basal dose every hour or similar (of nova rapid), and the pump is set so that you put in your carbs and the pump automatically delivers a pre set dose dependent on your current dose.
The dose can be set to vary throughout the day also. The clinic will assist you with setting the pump and altering over 48hrs. You have to monitor BGL every two hours plus restrict carbs to ensure doses are correct during that period. If you go low they will vary the basal and bolus for those times.
The pump is fantastic! It is the best thing. My son loves it (he's 12). His BGLs have stabilised and rarely has lows or highs. My son has type 1 not cfrd, so his diabetes is more acute then cfrd. I dont have to go to bed terrified he will have a hypo while he's asleep. The main thing is to ensure you do BGL's frequently (at least four a day).
Hope this helps. We have found the pump makes life so much easier, hope you do too.
