OK- Here's the deal...last night my mom called and said I sounded like I had been drinking. This is a pretty big deal since I am a recovering alcoholic and I had not been drinking. My brother called and I was able to convince him that I had not been drinking and he asked if I had checked my blood sugar levels because he said I was slurring. I had an episode several months ago where I fainted and my mom had also thought that I had been drinking then, too because earlier that evening I had been slurring my words.
I got my test kit (I had one and was supposed to be monitoring in February but then I went in the hospital and they monitored for a week and everything was normal so I figured I didn't need to test anymore) and tested my blood sugar today 3 hours after eating and my level was 175. I found some information that said that "normal" is anywhere in the 70-150 range. Should I be concerned that mine is 175? When is the best time to test? I have an appointment at the CF Clinic on Thursday. I will continue to monitor until then and let them know what is going on. I read an old post which stated that caffeine also raises blood sugar levels. Is this information correct? Yesterday and also during the previous episode I was drinking copius amounts of coffee. Should I lay off the caffeine? Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know as much about CFRD as others on here who are afflicted with it, but I got up to the high 120ish (while fasting)rang, and was nervous. I then started to reduce the sugars I take in for the most part, worked out more, and started taking a gram of cinnamon bark extract each day with my first meal. I also started taking turmeric (speculated that it helps to regulate blood sugar/pressure), high dose vitamin K, and started up the oregano oil under the tongue again. I went back in a couple weeks later and I was nearly below 100. Who knows what helped it get there, but I believe between diet, working out more (your muscles will use up more sugar in your system), and the supplements all worked synergistically to bring it down.

175 3 hours after a meal is a concern. You should talk with your clinic about your concerns.....if you have a home monitor, do a few days worth of tests for them. Good times to do it are first thing in the morning (fasting BS), right before a meal, and about 2 hours after a meal. If you go in there with a log for them....that would be helpful. I have not heard of caffeine affecting BS. Other symptoms of high blood sugars: frequent urnination, extreme thirst, headaches, blurred vision, slurred speach. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, I would call your clinic.

I hit ya back on myspace... but I want to add. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Since you have an appointment soon, try for a couple days testing your blood when you first wake up, before you eat/drink anything. Then for a few random meals take a before meal test and one two hours after. If you can for those meals count your carbs, or write down what you ate and how much. That will give the doc a really good idea about where you are.

Don't worry too much between now and your appointment. I hope they will give you an "oral glucose tolerance test" (which I forgot to explain). It is a very easy test, just time consuming. They do a quick finger poke test at the beginning, give you this orange soda sort of drink and do finger stick tests at various intervals after you drink it. I think the test takes 2 hours, but mine I was so high at a half hour they knew I hit the diabetes mark.

I was in denial for about 6 years and recently learned a lot of new stuff and I'd love to share what all I have learned. Shoot me back if you have any questions. I'm here for ya girl!
