Cipro and Sinuses

I haven't taken Cipro in so long now, that I don't remember the details except that it used to help my lungs quite a bit.

Does Cipro help with sinus infections too? I'm getting such nasty sinus drips at night that I literally can't stay quiet long enough to sleep. And it's just getting more and more gunky up there. Really gross. I have 9 more days of Cipro left, just wondering if it has cleared anyone's sinuses up while on it.

I've been told that antibiotics are only good for your chest and if you have a productive cough. That it really does nothing for your sinuses. I find sometimes I'll have a runny nose or something, and it won't turn into anything serious and its gone within a few days. I only take cipro when I have an active infection so as not to become immune to it.

Every antibiotic has different sinus tissue penetration - and different epithelial lining fluid penetration too, for that matter. It is much more difficult for antibiotics to penetrate sinuses than the lungs.

Cipro and the quinolones have good sinus tissue penetration. So you may be getting drips from your nose, but it's probably because things are flushing out.

If you are still having issues after your 9 days left of Cipro, I would tell Rao.

Sorry Cipro doesnt help the sinuses. My doctor had me use Avalox (sp?) for my sinuses!</end quote></div>

Cipro and Avelox are both quinolones, and both penetrate the sinue tissues.

Since Cipro works better on PA, Cipro is the drug of choice for CF sinus infections.

If you're 100% sure that your sinuses aren't colonized with PA, then Augmentin or Ketek can be good choices.
