Colds going to your chest

Hi!
I was just wondering if this happened to any of u.
When i get a cold (most of the time) it goes straight to my
chest, and i cant stop coughing. Its not a chesty
cough though, its just like a non-stop post nasal cough.
Sometimes i cough so much it causes me to vomit and i cant sleep
because i'm just coughing and coughing. Theres nothing i can do
until it turns into a chest problem and then i get antibiotics.
I was wondering if anyone else got this and what the did to stop
the cough?

thanks
Get this all the time then you get the "turns into Phenomena crap" I just tough it out and the second I start feeling bad I take some sort of antibotic usually zithromax sometimes it stops the development sometimes it doesn't.

Usually when i get anything, it always finds its way where i dont want it to go and i wind up on iv's. There have been a few times though when i had a sore throat, and it didnt go any further . Having cepacia makes things more complicated, because i used to ace little colds and things with no problem "pre-cepacia" . I Miss those days

Lauren,
This happens to me ALL THE TIME! Its usually when I know the "head cold" is coming to an end. I usually have this crappy tickling cough for a night or two (and if the cold was really bad, during the day too)... I often can't even breath enough to talk (and ALWAYS loose my voice from coughing so hard). So, I usually suck on lozenges (sometimes they help). As a child, I got an Rx for phenergan with codeine in syrup form. It sort of coats the throat. My doc said to use it SPARINGLY and only if I've been coughing for hours and can't sleep becasue of it. He said it is worth taking it if I'm loosing sleep from the cough, cause its not good to get rundown from lack of sleep either. So, I usually took a tiny bit of that and it worked well. I'd never take it during the day, cause we're supposed to cough (as uncomfortable as that may be... urgh).... but, at night I think its more than acceptable to do all you can to give your body some REST!!!

As far as IVs for after the cold gives me this sort of cough. I have never ever had to use them for this kind of cough, cause to me it is more of a tickle and not at all correlated to how congested I feel. Sometimes, AFTER this incessant coughing for days, it moves into more of that lovely PA cough bringing up lots of gunk, at which time I know its time for IVs. Usually though, this sort of cough (Lauren described above) is a GOOD sign for me, cause it means the cold is finally going away!

OOphs! I think I responded to the spreading of cold germs on the families thread about colds and little Ashton! My bad.

Anyway, I am a HUGE advocate of hand washing. Can you imagine how healthy we could all be if we just washed more often?!?! Its amazing how many people don't. Grrrrr......

Josh has this almost every time he gets a cold. For him it is usually from post nasal drip. He has that tickle cough that drives him crazy and keeps him from sleeping. His PT lady says that he coughs so much he irritates his airways and his lungs get tight. Then because he's not expanding properly, he develops something worse.

When he first gets sick we've tried sudafed with Delsym (cough suppressant) overnight. We don't use Delsym very often, but as long as its just a head cold, we feel like the quiet sleep does him wonders.

I also got an Rx once about 3 years ago when I had this sort of non-productive tickle cough for something they refer to as "Tessalon Pearls" cause they look like little clear pearls. These are also cough suppresants. They worked alright and didn't cause as much drowsiness in me as did the phenergan with codeine syrup. Just another suppressant to keep in mind if absolutely necessary. Again though, DON'T supress a cough just cause its annoying. Even if you're not getting much up, if you can put up with the hacking, its good to let it run its course, especially during the day.

Hate to say it but cough drops and cough syrups = not good for
people with CF. YES they help in the short run. They
help stop the cough. BUT you need to cough that crap out.
So in the long run it kinda gets you. What I do when I
feel a cold coming on is up my Vitamin intake. I will take
about 500mg more of vitamin C a day and usually get started on
zithromax.
