Costa Rica, Jamaica, Mexico...

One of my outlaws just sent an email out wondering if several of us would be interested in a spring break trip. We've been to Mexico with DS, but she also mentioned possibly going to either Costa Rica, Jamaica or the Dominican Republic.

I'm a little apprehensive about the possiblilty of a trip to Costa Rica, because I seem to recall when a relative went before, they had to have tons of different vaccines, preventative meds for malaria, etc.

That sounds like so much fun... I am going on a cruise in March to Mexico, Jamaica, and Costa Rica.. oddly enough.. when I saw your post I thought you might be going on a cruise.

I don't actually know about land travel...I don't really know about cruising either except that on the boat.. all the food and water is safe to drink and eat...Maybe that would be an option.. Have fun whatever you do...

Hi Liza,

I went to the DR about a year ago, and honestly, I wouldn't reccomend it, especially if you are going with a young one. The only shots I got were the hep A series, and I decided to take my chances with the malaria. I decided to start cipro a week before going, and ended up being one of the few people in my group who didn't get sick (stomach sick that is).

It rained all but one day. So it was kind of a wash (pun intended!) I've heard great things about Jamaica...plenty of things to do, great all inclusive resorts, beatiful place.

Have fun!!

I actually lived in Jamaica as a baby and have been back quite a few times. Swimming in the sea is so theraputic for Cf, I can't think of a reason not to go enjoy yourself! I looked into vacationing in COsta Rica with my son a few years ago - we chose Mexico instead because he was so young, but I was not going to vaccinate for anything if we went. I can't think of any CF related reasons not to go unless your health is really precarious right now. Have fun!

I'm kinda hoping they'll choose Mexico or Jamaica or someplace that doesn't require multiple connecting flights. Did some checking on some travel sites and there's really no easy way to get from home to Costa Rica. At least 2 stops along the way, including an overnight(s).

My brother was a missionary in DR for several years, and I've had lots of friends that went to visit him. I don't recall special vaccines to be honest, and no one ever got sick from anything and they roughed it-no fancy hotels, nothing. They lived in basically aluminum huts with no running water and hardly any electricity.
I would think that if they could go to parts of the country like that and be ok, the resort areas would be completely safe and fun too.

Every parent is different, and yes every child's health is different. But my mom never kept us from visiting wherever and I was fine. To me personally, that is part of teaching your child to not let their illness control their life. (of course within reason) If they're stable, ect. But I have been all over Europe, the Carribean and the Middle East and never caught a thing and have incredible memories and experiences from it. I say, if you can maintain your healthcare regimen while away, and your breathing is stable enough-go and enjoy travel as much as possible.

I have been to Costa Rica 3x. We never had to get immunizations. It is really beautiful there and a lot of fun.
