Cough Swabs

My daughter was due a cough swab today, but it didn't go ahead. The Nurse came to the house to do it and my daughter basically just freaked out and got really upset. The Nurse decided to leave it because my daughter was upset. I spoke to the Consultant this morning and suggested that me or my husband do the cough swab for our daughter but she decided this wasn't a good idea?! I told the Consultant that I knew my daughter would probably get really distressed because she did last time at Clinic and it didn't go ahead then, as she had had one a week before. Basically, my daughter finished her 'back-up' antibiotic Sunday night just gone and they always do a 'follow-up- cough sway when she finishes this.

Anyways, the Nurse 'left it in the air' and suggested we take our daughter to the Clinic next week for it done. Failing that, me and my husband feel confident enough to give it a go ourselves. Basically, our daughter is going through a 'bad patch' with cough swabs and we don't want to get her upset. We really need one doing though. PS the reason my daughter's Consultant thought that it wouldn't be a good idea me or my husband doing it was because 'we didn't have the experience'. She was also against us mixing up her antibiotics in apple puree and we proved her wrong and it worked absolutely fine. Do you have any suggestions? Grateful for any advice. Sorry about the spelling mistakes - just plain old tired! Gonna hit the sack now. X

My daughter went through a time when she HATED the throat cultures. I had to hold her down while she screamed and the nurse got the culture(Lots of fun). Maggie actually grabbed the swab out of the nurse's hand threw it on the floor and said"I will never let you do that and I'll throw it on the floor every time you try" So, I think at one time we even skipped doing a culture(my daughter wasn't coughing at the time.) My advice would be go easy on your daughter. She is going to have her fair share of swabs so if she's feeling ok and not coughing you may want to wait to have the clinic do it. Let them be the bad guys on this one. If you can't stop worrying about what she is or isn't growing you could try for the culture. But our clinic does not do follow-up cultures after antibiotics, they go by how the patient feels.

1. There are many things we do in life that upset people and or hurt feelings or make others feel bad. But that doesn't mean that we dont' do them. Sometimes we go ahead because we know it's best for health. This is one of those times.

2. I think it's important to have a healthcare professional do the swab. It's not rocket science, I know, but there is a reason that physicians & nurses have training. And experience counts too.

3. Don't let this go. Up to date and accurate sputum cultures are essential for treatment with CF

I agree with Amy on this one. Aidan now hates the throat cultures and goes crazy when it's time. It usually takes two nurses and myself holding him and usually pinching his nose. It sucks but I know if I give in once, he will try it every time. I insist on cultures every two months with Aidan to keep on top of everything. Plus it is not painful - just uncomfortable for 15 seconds.

I definetly pick my battles with Aidan but any CF treatment is not an option at this point. I let him fight me on other things that will not affect his health. So far it is working.

It helps when you are able to cough crap out. I know most kids cannot actually do that yet. But it's 100% easier when you can. Beats being gagged!
