coughing up blood question

i occassionally cough up small amounts of blood. my dr. is aware of this and i am taking extra vitamin k to try and help. i have only coughed up a lot of blood (more than a couple tablespoons) one time. here is my question: when i start coughing up blood, if i immediately calm myself and sit still and sip a glass of water i can stop the coughing. but should i be doing that? i HATE coughing it up, but would it be better to keep coughing until it's all out? sometimes i feel like if i keep coughing it just irritates me more.
thanks <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">

Its tricky to know what to do when you cough up blood. You should try to not cough too much, because you dont want to make the bleeding worse, BUT you also need to cough it out to be sure it is slowing down and stopping. If you can cough it out without coughing too hard that would be best ( which is what i do). I cough it out to access how much i am coughing up and to also make sure it is getting less and less each time. What i dont like to do is cough continuously, because i dont want to make it worse and continue bleeding. Coughing up blood is tough, because it is scary and unpredictable.

Yea, listen to Diane.
Most of us do it from time to time, and as long as it stops and doesn't get worse it's usually ok.
