Coughing worse during/after treatments

My son's cough started 6 days ago. It is one of those repetitive, dry coughs (sometimes constant cough every few seconds) with no runny nose, fever, mucus production. He was already on prednisolone, tobi and cipro at the time due to sinus surgery a few weeks ago. His cough is not getting better. Albuterol, tobi, hyptertonic saline, pulmozyme, and the vest all makes his cough a lot worse.

I called his nurse twice in the past few days telling her that I am pretty concerned about him. I said he is either going to the emergency room or needs to get in to see his Dr. today. His nurse called back and said his dr said that he needs to be on Tobi and cipro and to come in the office in two days. HELLO!!! I already left a message saying that he is on those medications. Makes me wonder what else she didn't tell him.

Back to my question - do treatments ever cause anyone else cough to get worse?

Thanks, Sharon, mom of Sophia, 6 and Jack, 4 both with cf

Hello Sharon: this reminds me of being dehydrated. Coughing with no production. The medicine is hopefully making him better . For me the coughing is a sign there is stuff that needs to come out. The vest actually will help relax my spasms. I always try to sip on water while I'm doing the vest. Cipro and Hypertonic Saline make me cough big time. I sometimes just have to give the Hypertonic Saline a rest for a couple of days. It is a real irratant. Especially if Jack is doing the treatments back to back. That is a lot to take in on the lungs and throat. Spreading out the treatments might help. Sipping water, soft massage to the back to relax the spasms, if he doesn't mind being touched while he is coughing. The hypertonic Saline is famous for making one cough. There may be sinus drip from the surgery too, lousy combination. He must be exhausted.

Gentle hug to the family

My daughter is not on TOBI but Hypertonic saline DOES make her cough or make her cough more if she is sick, absolutely. I would ask to speak to the CF doc directly today to address your concerns, especially since you are considering the ER.

Hi Sharon,

I can relate to your son's dry coughing fits, as I've had then in the past too.
Sometimes it is just a case of being dehydrated.

Maybe dried up secretions or inflamation in the lungs? If this is the case, sometimes I find Vicks steam inhalations are good for relieving muscular tention or(spasms)in the lungs.

But also in my experince, sometimes I find it can be an irritation from Tobi, as that's always made me cough in the past. I find it helps to dilute tobi with 2mls of saline, that way it's not so concentrated when you have it via the nebuliser.

I often use to struggle with inflamation in the lungs and was on prednisone numerous amounts of times, until I went onto Azithromycin and it has done wonders for my lungs.
Don't know it your son have been on that or not?

Then there is always the other side of having too many antibiotics, like it wiping off to many good bacteria the lungs and body, if this is the case it could be a fungal overgrowth. I use Itraconazole 100mgs once daily over a period of 1 week .
But consult with your doc before trying this drug, as I found out, that you can't be on prednisone while taking this particular drug, as the 2 together can create toxic levels in your system. But there shouldn't be a problem with (Itraconazole) if it's NOT TAKEN WITH PREDNISONE.

I would be persist about getting an appointment with your C.F specialist though so you can both work out a plan that works for you.

Big hugs to Jack and hope his cough get's better soon <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
