Hi Jada,
You probably know this, but may it be worth repeating. Antibiotics kill off not only the bad bacteria, but the good bacteria as well. When this happens, yeast: Candida Albacans (which occurs naturally in the body) overgrows and that can be a problem. Taking a probiotic can reduce the yeast population. My doctor prescribes a multi-strain probiotic that has a high bacteria count.
My doctor was telling me recently that there was a study that showed that probiotics use their own pathways and stimulate T cells (I can't recall but it was someingthing like T zero and T2 cells) which are also fighter cells. Since up to 70% of our immune system takes place in our digestive track, a probiotic can be really useful as a line of defense in illness. My doctor is using probiotics in a lot of different ways and is finding that her patients are using less antibiotics than ever.
I found a similar one to the one that she prescribes that I have also taken. I will share it with you, but you must ask your doctor about it before using it for Zoe. It is called Nature's Way Primadophilis Optima. It has 14 strains and 35 billion CFUs. I take one per day with food. It says it is for all ages. You can buy it on line for half the price you would pay in Whole Foods. It is not necessary to take this brand. The better ones have over 12 strains and above 25 billion BTU's, and refrigerated. I don't know if this is appropriate for kids -- so you must check this out.
In the past, when I have had acute thrush in my throat I have taken prescription lozenges called Clotrimazole Troche. But since taking the probiotic, I haven't had this happen.
