This may seem kind of odd, but I was wondering if anyone has dark spots on their legs. The skin around my ankles started turning a very dark gray, almost black color about 10 years ago (I am 34 now). Since then, it has progressed and know pretty much from the knees down, the skin appears "stained" with it all dark gray and then some occassional darker black spots (above the knees is completely normal andthe rest of my skin is fine - itonly appears from theknees down (but may eventually go up the whole leg, I don't know). Every doctor I've ever been to has no idea and has never seen it before. Anytime I'm admitted to the hospital, they always ask why my legs are black like that. I reply, "I would love it ifYOU could tell ME!"
I would attach a picture, but it's kind of embarassing and I never wear skirts or shorts even in the summer anymore. (Some people even ask if I got a tatoo that "went bad" or if I've been out fishing in acreek and haven't washed off yet, or flat out "what happened to your legs?" However, if someone thinks they may have this and is curious if it looks similar, I will share.
The closest to an answer I got was when I saw a dermatologist. They were confused as well, as I do not take any tetracyclines (a class of medications that are known to cause skin discoloration). They did some research and said there were a few instances in which Levaquin could cause it. I have been taking Levaquin for about 7 years and Cipro before that, which is in the same flouroquinolone class, so this could be the culprit.
So,
1. Have you ever experienced dark gray "staining" on your legs.
2. If so, have you ever taken Levaquin, Cipro or another flouroquinolone for an extended period of time?
3. Do you know of another cause?
4. If you have had teh darkening, can anything "erase" it?Thanks much!
