Diet or Regular?

Hi....

So, I'm curious how many of us drink diet soda or regular soda, and whether or not you have CFRD?

I drink diet (but I HATE it), and sometimes splurge and drink regular. I was told I shouldn't drink regular cause that kind of sugar is like an instant rush, and your body just can't break it down with CFRD (or it starts to break it down after the insulin has kicked in, which is like a double whammy for hypoglycemia).

Has anyone else with with/without CFRD been told to switch to one or the other? I sure do miss regular....

Anyway, here's what I'm wondering:

1. Do you have CFRD?
2. Have you been told to drink diet vs. regular? If so, why?
3. What do you actually drink?

when i had steroid induced diabetes i drank sugary drinks, but only with my meals. that way the insulin would cover it properly and the meal would make the sugar break down slower. sometimes i would drink them in between meals. they didnt really make that much of a difference to my sugars but i knew it wasnt the best thing so i didnt make a habit of it. i dont think there is any reason to completely cut out sugary drinks. i was never told to do so and was advised against it when i asked about it.

I drank regular coke as a kid and teen, but when I was told that my sugars could get a problem (I´m not shure, I think it was in my twenties) I switched to diet. I remember that it was hard for 3-4 weeks, but then I was used to it annd now I can´t stand the taste of the regular any more. I do also like Sprite zero or when we visit the USA others of the "no sugar"lemonades.
What I do often drink in restaurants here is "Apfelschorle", that is applejuice premixed with mineral water. It is ok to handle with the insulin and in some restaurants here you don´t get diet coke...

no diabetes. but I avoid soda pretty much. I drink it once in a while as a treat, but it's just empty calories and too sugary for me. I've never really had a problem with my weight, so cutting back on soda is a must for me.

I have CFRD and drink diet soda. The only time I drink regular soda is when my sugar is low. Since becoming diabetic I've lost my taste for sugary stuff.

I am not CFRD yet, but am close to it. I've been told to drink the diet over regular, but I HATE diet drinks!!!! I go without if diet is the only option. Something about that artifical sweetner just makes my belly churn...I don't care what the brand is.

So yes, I drink regular. Usually only at work or on the weekend. In the evening I'll drink orange juice, milk or water.

I know it's bad for me, but I'm weak...

Hi Sonia,

did you try the caffeine-free diet coke already? In my opinion it tastes more like the regular.

No caffeine? AND no sugar?

Uli, I have to admit I'm intrigued with the apple drink. Ok, no more soda for me today.

i have had cfrd for 26 years now and regular soda is a no no. So is diet since i am allergic to aspartame ( nutra-sweet) . I drink seltzer water instead, wild cherry being my favorite, Kind of like a soda to me without any of the problems......lol

I am allowed to drink regular soda and do not have to limit my sugar even though I have CFRD. I just take insulin for carb intake. I hate diet.

i used to drink diet pepsi all the time and then I actually thought it was affecting my skin of all things so I quit drinking it and now I've just lost my taste for it.

I too have moved on to flavored water..favorite is also Black Cherry!!!! I also still drink sprite. And has anyone else tried this miraculous little drink called Rockstar, I'm sure that has to be something wrong with as the energy drinks just seem suspect to me, but once in a while it sure does the trick.

But to answer your question, I have CFRD and have never actually been told not to drink regular soda. For whatever that is worth

I actually really like caffeine free diet coke or pepsi. I usually only drink them at night though when I can't have caffeine, but need something fizzy for with pizza and such. That is about the only diet I can stomach though.

I can't do flavored waters and selzer and such... for some reason, it really really makes me burpy and bothers my GERD. (Wierd that soda doesn't usually do this, cause that's probably 10X more carbonated!)

Anyway, thanks for the suggestions. Anyone else been told they could drink regular with CFRD? I'm liking what I'm hearing so far! lol

Well I was not told not to drink regular coke, but
- I´m used to it since many years
- and I don´t want to take so much insulin for drinking and having low bloodsugars afterwards again

If you like the caffeine-free diet why don´t you drink this all the time?

Cause I need caffeine to keep me going during the day. So, I drink one or two caffeinated beverages during the day and then maybe one of the caff-free at night.

Why not get some of that diet rockstar for a caffiene fix? They are really sugary tasting if you like that. I don't personally. I stick to diet coke, kool aid with sugar twin and flavored water.

Because my mom is diabetic, I would sometimes drink diet coke (or when she bought Pepsi), but not too much, cause she'd get pissed at all us kids drinking her stuff!!
As I got my own income and could afford to buy my own cola's, I didn't go for the 'unleaded', in fact, sometimes I would have Mountain Dew, of which I found out had more caffein in it, than cola!
since my divorce, and my own allowance that no longer stopped at $300 a week (to include many unnecessary things like lunches at work, mobile phone bill, etc.), I started drinking more cola, and all it did was end up around my waist, so I cut down to be able to fit back into my jeans!!
Of course, nothing goes better with coke, than a bag of pretzels, for me!!! (I just keep in mind not to pull a "George Bush" with the pretzels!)

hey sonia,

i have CFRD. truely, one of the hardest parts for me at diagnosis was giving up my mountain dew! as a 15-year old i was a loyal drinker...

BUT, i switched to diet and now i am in love with diet coke. some of the other diet sodas are yucky. diet root beer and diet orange soda rock! oh, and they now have hawiian punch light made with splenda--yummy. splenda really is god's gift to diabetics.
