Diharrea

Hey,

So, I'm only on second day of IV meds and I'm already having diahrrea... grrr... its rare I get it, even when on meds, but apparently this is my time.

Anyway, a couple things: I know its a "natural" reaction to being on such strong abx and is a usual side effect. I also know they say not to take AD products. So, just curious what you guys do when you have it? What do you eat?? What do you find doesn't "go right through"? How do you get all your extra calories (and then some!) that you need?

Finally, does anyone know the reason we get it when on abx? I'm just curious... I know its natural but am curious what the actual reason is for this side effect.

Thanks!

Oh, and I AM eating LOTS of yogurt. I have been since the day before starting meds. Usually about 2 cups a day.

The diarrhea happens because the abx kill off the good intestinal flora in your gut as well as the nasty bacteria that its being taken to kill off. Some abx are harder than others in that regard.

When M is on abx, we increase his probiotics to twice a day and get religious on his pectin. He cannot, not, not afford to go without pectin while in abx and even then he has diarrhea.

We sometimes do use AD during abx treatment. Sometimes, the diarrhea can be so nasty that it just pours out of the poor kid and we end up giving him Immodium. We're approved to do this from his doctors. We mostly do it at night or when the diarrhea reduces the poor child to tears from the discomfort and rash it causes. I figure his last doctors had him on Immodium every 4 hours permenantly so taking a little bit for symptomatic relief during abx treatment can't be worse, and as I said his doctors are in agreement with that course of treatment for him.

I cannot tell you if that would be an acceptable option for you. You would need to speak to your doctors about it. But M has short gut and without aggressive probiotics and pectin has chronic diarrhea. He doesn't have formed, normal poops EVER but with our treatments they are tolerable and he's able to gain weight and thrive. When the diarrhea starts to pour out of him, yes he will drop weight like crazy. But, the primary reason we occasionally use Immodium is a comfort measure for the poor kiddo.

Unfortunately, the only thing that fully works is to finish the abx and re-colonize the gut. We continue the higher dose of probiotics for a week after abx treatments to get his gut flora re-established and then drop back to once a day probiotics for him. It helps and usually by a week after he's back to his normal. But, as long as you are taking abx, you are killing the gut flora and that will cause diarrhea no matter what we do to combat it and slow it down.

In addition to extra probiotics, rice, gelatin, and oatmeal can have better sticking power than most foods and can sometimes stop diarrhea (though I have no idea if they can stop it when it is caused by IV abx). Coconut oil helps support good gut flora, so adding that to your diet in addition to more yogurt may be a good idea as well. Make sure you get enough fluids and electrolytes. Folks in third world countries die of dehydration and electrolyte imbalance due to bad diarrhea.

Good luck with this.

thanks for the explanation and suggestions. since it isn't bad enough (yet), i will let my gut do its thing and contact the doc if i start loosing weight cause of it. as far as the ideas for things to eat, i really appreciate it! i've actually been adding coconut oil to my smoothies for some time now and stopped when i went on abx cause i assumed all oil would add to diarhea issues, but glad that's not the case! i will start adding it again right away. thanks again, ladies!
