disability questions

Ok so I go monday to apply for disability. I have applied before (5/6 years ago) and was denied, but I was healthier than. I was denied. I got a lawyer and all that but I dunno what happened to him (I didn't have to pay) and I was denied.

Well I don't think I qualify for SSDI b/c I don't have any work credit (or enough). I MIGHT qualify off my grandma who is now recieving SSI retirement (if that counts).

So essentially I am applying for SSI. Today I called the guy and he told me that for a family of 3 the income max is 3832(in louisiana). So we def qualify. He said I would get 675 a month if our income was below 2494 (it is).

So now I just have to be "disabled enough". I told them about my CF, asthma, and my GI issues.

Any tips and help about things I need to do to help plead my case right the FIRST time??

If I remember correctly when I applied for SSI they had to have some kind of documentation from the doc confirming diagnosis. But more than likely they'll probably tell you everything you need at the meeting. I'm from Ohio so I'm not sure what kind of differences there are from state to state. Good luck!

Jessica,
I would highly recommend emailing Beth Sufian at CFLegal@cff.org. She was a huge help to me when applying for SSI. You basically have to do all of their work for them. One of things that helped me is understanding that for the most part they are going to work at not getting you qualified-that means I needed to be up to speed on what and how I qualify.

There are 3 specific things that they look at (I'm sorry I can't remember them off the top of my head) and in the documentation I submitted we basically spelled it out for them. "I qualify under code....because of...." Then you will want to include your records as well. Make sure to keep track of your contact-if you have someone that you have met personally and can use as a contact point, take advantage of that.

Nothing can be gained by doing a face-to-face interview IMHO. I'd call and re-schedule it for the following week over the phone. This gives you a week to figure out what you are doing. You need to review the impairment listings. It's not about making yourself out to be sick. It's a clear cut list of ways you can meet it or not. You only need to be one to be considered disabled. Apply for both SSI and SSDI. Also in the interview you'll need your daughter's social security as a file will be started for her as your dependent. You can google "Cystic Fibrosis Social Security Impairment" and read the whole section on cf.

Start gathering medical records only from the last year that build your case towards meeting the impairment. You do not need to include all your medical records. Additionally, your doctor needs to write a letter. He should have a template at clinic in a binder provided to all accredited cf centers by Beth Suffian. If you are going for the impairment based on freq off infections you'd be best to create a spreadsheet showing the history of infections.

You could also consider contacting Julie at dafcf.org for her help.

So glad you were able to get in touch with them. Hoping that it all goes through w/out a hitch this time around.
