DOCTOR'S APPOINTMENT

Exactly 4 years ago today we meet a wonderful doctor. We were told Courtney had CF and Dr. Noel entered our lives.

As most of you know Courtney has not been taking her meds like she should be. I told her she was going to have to tell the doctor that today.

He was quite unpleased when he plotted her height and weight on the growth chart today. She is 5 feet 3 1/2 inches tall and has dropped to 82 pounds. She is not even on the chart anymore. She is WAY below the 5th percentile. When he asked why she said "I have not been taking my meds".

He said.......there are two possible reasons you are not taking your meds....
1. You want to be model thin, or
2. You are being a stupid teenage.

She started to cry and he rolled his chair right up to her. He said "you are quite lucky the CF has only affected your digestive system at this point. If you let your nutrition go, your immune system will get down and you will start having problems with your lungs". He then gave her some ideas of how to remember to take her pills. He also told her no one is perfect, but she HAS to take care of herself.

I stayed VERY quiet through all of this. I wanted her to hear it from the doc.

Dr. Noel is such a wonderful man! He was stern with her, but also let her know that we all make mistakes.

Since he is not pleased with her progress she had to have a lot of bloodwork done and she will have to have another ultrasound on her gallbladder. He wants to see her again in 3 months instead of 6.

Keep you fingers crossed that him talking to her will make a difference and she will start taking her health into her own hands!!!

He sounds like a great doc. And kudos to you for staying quiet and staying out of it.
I'm sure that eventually she will take control of her meds in a more effective way--especially if both her doc and her family (you) continue to show her the respect of allowing her to have the control. Still and all, I hope for both your sakes that she'll use her power to take her meds (rather than to not take them) sooner rather than later.
Keeping you in my heart,

GREAT Doctor!!! Thankfully her CF is mild. I am sure she will get it all together very soon. If she would become more athletic, she would want to eat more foods. Working out might be one solution for her.

She knows this info, but needed to hear it from someone other then Mom. I am proud of you for keeping the lips zipped. I know it had to be tempting, but it sounds like you have a great doctor.

You did the right thing. Your daughter is going to grow up to be very responsible with her CF if you keep handling the situation like this.

My hat is off to you. You did the right thing.

It is great that he sat down and explained it to her. He sounds like a good and caring doctor. Sometimes it takes someone outside the family to truely get the point across. Now she knows what you were telling her was in her best interest and not being an overprotective mother. Hopefully she will listen to him and get back on track. <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">
