Ellie only BMs 1 - 2x daily...her stools have always been soft, then again, she's still only eating fortified breast milk. I've heard that CF babies pass stool more frequently if they are pancreatic insufficient (which she is). Every time we tell her dietician that she only has BMs 1-2x daily, she is always surprised. We've been trying to get her to gain weight, but she's truly not a big eater. She eats every 3 - 4hrs and that's even "forcing" her to eat. I keep reading that CF babies seem to have an insatiable appetite when they are PI - but Ellie doesn't seem to be this way....and yet...she's not gaining as much weight as her doctor would like. Any thoughts? Anyone experiencing something similar? FYI, she takes 1/2 capsule Pancrease MT4s with each feeding (2 - 4oz fortified breast milk), is 4.5mos old, weight 7.5lbs at birth, weighed 12lbs 9oz at last CF visit earlier this month....

Both Ethan and Caleb are Pancreatic Insufficient. When their enzymes are working good, they only have 2 BM's a day. Ethan is never really hungry and thus I try to pack in as many calories in as small a portion as I can. Caleb is a good eater and does some times seem to have an insatiable appetite, but I think at those times he is going through a growth spurt or he is needing an enyzme adjustment.
My only suggestion is to see if you can fortify the breast milk any more. When Caleb was younger, the nutritionist also wanted us to fortify my breast milk and I couldn't get him to take a bottle good. So I gave up on bottles and started putting formula in the applesauce I used to give him his enzymes.
WHAT A GIFT YOU ARE GIVING TO YOUR DAUGHTER IN GIVING HER BREAST MILK!!!!! I know it is a lot of work pumping and having another kid running around. DON'T GIVE UP!!!!!!
Blessing,
Missa

Thank you for your input! The pumping is great fun! <grin>. They don't want us to start her any solids at this point...but I'm wondering when they'll give us the go-ahead? We started Owen (no CF) on solids right at 4 mos because he had an insatiable appetite! I'm hoping that adding some extra calories via solids will help once we get there! The nutritionist hasn't really given us any other suggestions for fortifying EBM other than with formula - but I'm wondering if there is something else we can add? I suppose I can ask at her next appointment...I always feel guilty/frustrated when she tells us what percentile Ellie has reached. At last visit she was 11% in relation to weight-to-length, but 27% for weight overall. Owen was always around the 25-30% as an infant which makes me consider that Ellie may be appropriate in percentile for what her genes allow - not necessarily that her CF is keeping her "light". If the enzymes weren't working, she would have more frequent BMs...but we can only get her to each so much, which is frustrating!!!

I know some of the other moms have been talking about putting coconut oil in the bottles.
I did just start putting coconut oil in Ethan's drink. The trick was finding coconut oil that does not solidify in his drink. The brand I found, that seems to be the best out there, is Tropical Traditions gold label. I was reading on it the other day and they say it contains lauric acid and the only other place you can find that naturally is in breast milk. It is also a medium chain fatty acid, which means it is digested very easily.
I think this might be a great option!!!!! It can help Ellie gain weight and also boost her immune system.
Just start small. You need to gradually increase it, as it can cause diarrhea if your body is not used to it.
Blessings,
Missa
