Doxycycline reaction...

Has anyone here had to take doxycycline and had a reaction to it? I had to start taking it in conjunction with Bactrim to help with the stubborn steno infection I had. However 4 or so days into taking the doxy, my tongue became "irritated" and sensitive to things I ate and drank. For example, I was trying to eat a pistachio/pineapple salad and I told my husband that it had a real bite to it, like it was tingly and burned a bit. He had some too and didn't know what I was talking about. Then the insides of my cheeks became inflamed and irritated and had that metallic-y taste. I have taken Bactrim before and never had those symptoms, but this is the first time I've take Doxy, so I knew that's what was causing it. I stopped taking it yesterday and today my mouth is already starting to feel better. Just curious whether anyone else has had trouble with Doxy. Thanks,Jen 34 w/cf

Your symptoms sound like the same ones i have when i got thrush for the first time 2 years ago. Everything started to taste spicy, and i kept looking in my mouth for a white film on my tongue or throat, because thats what i hear it looks like and i didnt see anything. When my nurse came ( i was on home iv's) i asked her to look at my throat and she said i definitely had thrush farther down and it wasnt too bad, but bad enough for me to notice a taste change. My doctor prescribed these lozenges and it went away. I've taken doxycycline a lot and never had any reaction from it that was negative. Bactrim on the other hand is another story, it gives me bad headaches<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-disgusted.gif" border="0"> ~Diane 39 / cf / diabetes / b.cepacia

Sounds like thrush - you can take Diflucan or Mycelec Troches (you suck on these - does a great job).Piperpmcp@comcast.net

Thanks everyone for your responses. Oddly enough, a day or so after I stopped the doxy, the symptoms started to subside. It took another day or so after that before my mouth felt normal again. Would thrush clear up that fast (and without any treatment)?? I am still wondering if it was an allergic reaction.Jen
