Eating Habits

Ok, so now that I have diabetes (at least for awhile because I won't go off prednisone) I was wondering if those that developed diabetes changed their diets. My doctor said not too but I don't understand that.

I am not underweight (5'3 120 lbs) so I don't think that I will lose any weight. But I love sweets and don't know if I should not have any. I am having low sugar ice cream so maybe that is better?

And do I go off carbs? This is so hard because other diabetics I have talked to have done that but I don't know if it applies to me.

What do you all do?

You asked if you should change your diet, but you didn't really specify how you eat, what your "diet" entails.

It depend somewhat on what kind of diabetes med you are using.

Certain Insulins allow you to Carb count which is PERFECT for the CFer.
(something they didn't have when I first became a diabetic)
However, there are simple carbs (sugar, juice, ice cream, candy bar) and complex carbs (rice, bread, milk, potatoes).
A balanced meal is best for all people, especially diabetics, even diabetics on insulin. A balanced meal means a combo of Fats, Carbs and Proteins.
The reason is that each one affects your blood sugars at different intervals/rates. Thus, the more LEVEL you keep your blood sugars, the better. The Carb works first, as it's decending, the protein kicks in, then the fats kick in.

If you want to have simple carbs (ice cream, candy bar), it's best to combine it within your balanced meal so that it all works together.

I didn't want to add much too Sallys post I just wanted to say I agree. I was initially told to alter my diet but as the years have passed I have been told to just monitor my blood sugars and adjust/control my sugars with insulin.

I also had weight issues though I was clinging to about 105-110 and I am 5'7". NOW post transplant I am having to think more about what I eat because I am on prednisone and that tends to make my reaction to food/carbs more exagerrated.

Otherwise I don't really eat a specific "diabetic" diet. I know there are foods that really mess me up and I stay away from them but otherwise I eat what I please. I refrain from Pancakes and syrup, waffles (unless I am absolutely craving them) and brownies (again except for the occasional one) BUT I eat cereal still along with ice cream and sometimes candy bars.

Take Care,
Lindsey
