I'm being put on it as a muscle relaxer for use at night, however its actually a tricyclic antidepressant. Has anyone had any experience with this or other tricyclics? Thanks in advance!

I took that for about a week for the migraine headaches I was getting... It just made me real tired...not to much of anything else...

Hope you feel better.

Thanks, Jennifer!

I'm going to be on it for treatment of TMJ since I can't seem to stop grinding my teeth and my jaw pain is unreal.

Did it help with your migraines? I suffer migraines sometimes too, but not often enough to warrant ongoing meds such as this. Did you have any side effects other than the sleepiness?

Thanks!

I wasn't on it long enough to have any side effects.. I took myself off it because I already take a tricycle med for sleep so I felt like it was to much to take both... I have not had a migraine in about two months.. Thank God because they are so horrible.. and unbearable....

I think you should be fine but like I said it does induce sleep.. and be prepared to feel a little tired in the morning when you are first getting up...

Hi Sonia
I was given Elavil for chronic pain after my lobectomy. Unfortunately my problem was pain from a cut nerve and the Elavil did not help at all. But it is used commonly for pain. I hope it does help your because jaw pain can be pretty uncomfy. If you grind your teeth while you sleep you can get a teeth gaurd. I am not sure if you've heard of it or not. But its seems to help my dad that is a night time teeth grinder. Good luck!

I have not taken the drug but also would recommend looking into a tooth guard to help stop the grinding.

I was treated for TMJ years ago by a dentist who moved my front teeth out just a little bit, then put me in a retainer that I wear at night -- it has almost completely cured me.

Thanks, everyone!

Actually, I already have a nightguard that my dentist made a couple months ago... well, today, when I went to a specialist cause the nightguard was making it far worse, I was told I needed a "hard" guard for "bottom" teeth.... right now I have a hard and soft guard for over my "top" teeth. Urgh. So, I highly doubt insurance will cover 2 nightguards in 2 months, but we'll keep our fingers crossed.

I've actually worn a night guard since in my teens and it just recently started getting much much worse nightguard or not. So, please keep me in your prayers that something works. I'm really in a lot of pain and can hardly chew most of the time. Its terrible. I also was a bit unhappy with my doctor visit today since after sitting in the waiting room for an hour past my appt. time, he took one feel of my temples and told me to "bite down" and that was the entire exam. **sigh** Not very thorough if you ask me. So, we'll see. I just really can't handle this pain much more though. Its especially terrible when I'm doing my nebs and have to hold my mouth open around the neb. Urgh.

Anyway, sorry to ramble. I'm going to take my elavil early tonight as I have to get up early tomorrow. Thanks for the great responses. So, I assume its ok for CFers to be on a tricyclic antidepressant?

Thanks,
