FAM

I am starting the FAM so I can figure out my cycles better. I was wondering if some of you FAM users can help me out with something.
Can I take my temps with an ear thermometer? I know the oral is the best way but I dont have one. Not that buying one is out of the question but I have an ear thermometer already. Have you used an ear one and do you think its good enough?
Also I stopped my b/c pills about 3 1/2 weeks ago. How soon will I get an accurate reading for my charting? I am going to start charting soon but I know the pill can mess with my cycle. How soon will it be normal?
Thanks for your help.

I would be surprised, if it worked at all...As most of us do often have a higher temperature due to infections and so on, I would not trust it, especially not as a method for not getting pregnant.

Khristina, I can only speak about my non-cf experience with this. I'm not sure how it differs but here goes.

I started charting about 2 months before I wanted to get pregnant. It was very clear to me when I was ovulating by the temp. increase. I used an oral thermometer, but any will work as long as you are consistant. I believe that being off B/C pills for one month is sufficient or until you have a regular period.
Good luck!

* I checked for you:

Pregnancy After the Pill
There is no reason to worry about becoming pregnant after you stop taking the pill. The pill will in no way affect your fertility and more than 90% of pill-users become pregnant within a year of coming off the pill. This being said, it does take some women longer to become pregnant after stopping the pill.

Typically, it takes about three months for full fertility to return. Some women may find that it takes closer to six months for them to become pregnant. Other women become pregnant immediately after going off of the of the pill. It really depends upon your body's own natural cycle. Though you can try to get pregnant immediately after coming off of the pill, it is usually recommended that you wait a little while. Allow your body to go through one or two regular menstrual cycles. This will help your body get back in sync again, and will also help you to pinpoint your ovulation dates.

FAM technique questions

Uli that would be an accurate statement or thought if you soley relied on the temp. But with FAM you rely on temp, cervical fluid and the position of your cervix.
But if it was soley on the temp you would be right it would be innacurate because of our cf.

But isn´t the cervical fluid also different in most of us?
By the way: I thought you mean doing it for not getting pregnant, or do you do it for knowing when its the best time to get pregnant?

FAM technique questions

Hey Uli,
I have been on b/c for so long I dont know how my cervical fluid is normally. I know having cf can affect my cervical fluid you are right on about that. But I hope by using this method instead of the pill I will find out all of this info about myself.

I am trying to get prepared for getting pregnant so I am doing my research on this. In the future I would like to use this method for a means of birth control instead of the pill. But for now I am learning about my body so I can be better prepared for when we are ready to try to conceive. I hope this all make sense, and I am not being confusing lol!

Thanks Jane for looking that up for me. I forget that the internet is a wealth of info. But firsthand knowledge is better than anything else sometimes.

FAM technique questions

hi, Khristina. I have been a natural family planning (fertility awareness) teacher for a very long time. I have some specific questions for you and would be glad to talk with you through this post or by PM.
1. Are you trying to avoid or achieve pregnancy?
2. Do you remember how often you had a period before you started hormonal contraception? If so, what was the length from the start of your period to the day before the next one started?
heads up about thermometers - use a basal body thermometer (Becton-Dickinson is the best digital one) to get an accurate reading so that you can clearly see the relatively small rise in temperature that comes after ovulation.
the first two questions are the most important; I look forward to hearing from you.
