FAM technique questions

Hi Khristina--

My husband and I use Natural Family Planning (Sympto-Thermal Method). It is an easy method to learn and highly effective because you are not just relying on one sign but multiple ones that your body gives you when it prepares monthly for the possibility of pregnancy.

The best way to learn NFP is from a qualified instructor - that is, one who is certified from a NFP teacher education program. One such organizaton that could give you information about NFP instruction available in your community is The Couple to Couple League.

Phone - (513) 471-2000 nationally
or visit their website at: <a target=_blank class=ftalternatingbarlinklarge href="http://www.ccli.org">Couple to Couple league---Natural Family Planning</a>www.ccli.org

Best wishes to you and your future family plans...have fun trying!<img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-wink.gif" border="0">

Hey Laura,
(graphic in nature...lol)

Ok here comes the questions...lol.
Let me just explain what is going on and then I will ask my questions.
I have brain stormed and came up with when I think I stopped the Ring. I think I stopped the Ring the last week of April.
I had a period after I stopped it but it was very light, what I would consider spotting.
For the last couple of days I have felt like I am gearing up to start my period
(a little bloated, sensitive nipples, and a little bit of cramping). But what puzzles me is that my cervix is just now starting to move up. I would consider it medium and half way up and a little open. The fluid has changed a little. Its creamy and just a little stretchy and cold.
My question is, shouldn't the cervix be already open if I have ovulated already?
Or am I ovulating and I am thinking that my period is coming instead?
Or is there just no way of knowing since the Ring is still messing with my cycle?

Just a little confused
Thanks Laura
Oh and by the way I got my basal thermometer today!!!!
I have looked up the beads and I will buy them when I figure out if my cycle is typical.

Khristina,
Your post is a great example of how much is happening during the menstrual cycle! Since this is your first cycle after using hormonal contraception it may not be typical, you may not ovulate this month. You may have residual hormonal activity from the NuvaRing. Your cervix will open, slightly, at the time of ovulation, to let the sperm in. It is open for a very short period of time, then closes again to protect the sterile uterine environment for the possibility of pregnancy. Keep watching and charting!

Two interesting things about my cycle...
First of all some background, I was on the pill for 12 years. I was off for 6 months before switching from trying NOT to get pregnant to trying TO get pregnant. The following month I was pregnant. In those 6 months I watched my cycle through basal temp monitoring and cervical mucus analyzation.
-My average cycle was 34 days. (interesting side note, the 40 week pregnancy is only for a person with a normal length cycle - my due date is more like 41 weeks from date of last period).
-My fertile mucus presented itself in a rubber cement, globber ball each month. If I'd wiped and not notice this I would have missed seeing my fertile mucus. Don't underestimate how it can come and go in a matter of hours. I thought that since it wasn't slippery thin and stretchy the sperm wouldn't be able to travel to where they needed to go. I thought I'd have to take Robitussin or Mucinex - boy was I wrong!
-For the first 4-5 months my temp would start out low in the beginning of a cycle and then spike at ovulation and then drop off the following day not stay high like it's supposed to until my period would visit. I learned this was a classic pattern for women coming off birth control. The lack of a steady flow of progesterone (the hormone that causes the rise in temp) after ovulation would have ended a pregnancy if it had happened. When I saw in month 5 or 6 that this pattern had stopped I knew I was much more likely to be able to maintain a pregnancy. So I bought an ovulation predictor to test my knowledge and I was spot on. This book had many example graphs which were very helpful. "Your Fertilily Signals" The sooner you start gathering temps the more data you'll have. Remember to take your temp before you even get out of bed and to do it at the very same time every day.

thanks, Lauren, for sharing your experience. The transition from hormonal contraception to your body creating it's own cycles can take some time.
