Feeling Nasty....

Urgh! So, I hadn't taken scandishakes in years, and now I know why... they're DISGUSTING! Now, I feel extremely nauseous. I usually have to guzzle them down very quickly, using water as a "chaser" and holding my breath. I'm sure this does not help my tummy feel well with all that sloshing around after being "dumped" within 30 seconds into it! Ewwww....

Does anyone else feel like crap when they drink these things? If I tried, I know I could puke right now (but I won't cause I'm terrified of throwing up). Either way, I have like 180 packets of these things and I'm dreading gulping them down again. But, I know I need to, cause I'm loosing weight with all the running I'm doing.

Also, does anyone take insulin with scandishakes? They have like 60 carbs per packet, but I'm just not into taking yet another dose of insulin... I already dose myself at least 3-4 times a day, and frankly, I just don't wanna do it for snacks like these.

Well, I'm going to go try to take a nap while I curse satan for developing this "strawberry" concoction (strawberry? has satan ever tasted a strawberry, cause it certainly don't taste like this... ew.....)

First lets say that any "artificial" strawberry flavor is NASTY. I always stick with vanilla flavor because it seems to be easier to mix things into it or change the flavor. I use schandishakes & dont find them that bad in flavor. I will admit that they have to be COLD & that I dilute them more than what the packets say, but I make blenders full & stick in the fridge. I did have to use insulin last year when I was on steroids, but not just from the shakes alone. Then again I dont have CFRD!

Sonia,

Have you tried the Carnation Instant Breakfast VHC? We started Courtney on them recently. 540 calories per 8.45 ounce can. After shipping they came out to about $1.13 per can.

They only come in vanilla so Courtney has been adding a scoop of ice cream or a little chocolate syrup to them. I am not sure if this would work with you having CFRD but if you would like me to write the nutritional values from the back of the can let me know.

Hi Sonia,

I would certainly take insulin with it, because they have lots of sugar in it!
I prefer the chocolate version, thats ok but I do not take them often.

I know your post wasn't intended to make anyone laugh, but it made me laugh. Reminds me of all the times Mark has discussed why he HATES those stupid shakes. Plus, they have SO much sugar as you mentioned. He's borderline diabetic so he's diet controlled right now (how do you do that with CF anyways??? <img src="i/expressions/face-icon-small-smile.gif" border="0">) but those just throw him overboard.

I have no advice, save for the fact that maybe the boost is worth the $$$?

We have recieved some free boost cases by calling local dieticians associated with major hospitals and asking if we can take their "almost" or already expired cases/cans. Some have been very generous!

Friend of mine with lupus used to drink ensure at work and when she'd crack open a can of that stuff the vitaminy smell would make my stomach roll. I'm kinda glad his doctor suggested we use regular carnation instant breakfast powder mixed with whole milk and some cream, 'cuz I don't think I could stomach feeding Max pediasure or ensure. I can get the chocolate powder at the wholesale club for a lot less than the grocery store, but lately Max has been on a strawberry kick, so I've been scrambling to find just the strawberry flavor.
