I wanted to share with all of you what just happend to me, my family is away for the night visiting in Chattanooga for spring break (wife is a teacher). I went down to the Universitiy of Tennessee to send off our basketball team which is playing in the Sweet Sixteen against Ohio State this Thursday night. As I was leaving I approached our coach Bruce Pearl and wished him well. Also I wanted to let him know that a little girl that he had visited at Childrens Hospital here in Knoxville passed away two weeks ago. She was 23 years of age, and the reason I felt that I should tell Bruce was because he was visiting with her and her family, she asked to say a prayer with him. She took her mask off and he leaned over and she said a prayer for him and the team. Now, I didn't know her, but I read that in the local paper which wrote and article about her two days after she passed. He remembered Kristen and her family very well. I told him my little girl that has CF, he asked about her, and told me "Were going to win this game for Kristen and your little girl." I felt compelled to tell him because I am as big of Tennessee Vol fan as you will ever meet. I went for my own pleasure, but I remember my wife telling me a few days ago when I told her about the newspaper article about Kristen that I should find a way to let Bruce know. His compassion for Kristen and my little girl speaks volumes about my our coach Bruce Pearl, I just wanted to share with all of you. "GO VOLS!"

Being an Ohioian, I would be rooting for Ohio State, but they should not even be in this game, as Oden should have been given a technical foul and my team, Xavier should be going to play Tennesse. Now after hearing this story, I will def be routing for the VOLs.

Thanks

Lori

That was an awesome story. Thank you very much for sharing, AND YES YOUR DAUGHTER WILL BEAT THIS CHALLENGE.

I will be 40 years old in 16 months and still play hockey twice a week, and softball once a week, aside from running almost every day. In fact, one of my hockey teams just won back to back Championships and I won the Best Goaltender Award for the season.

I have a full time job as a marketing manager and have a wonderful wife and daughter. Aside from taking more medicines then my grandmother, CF has only made me more competitive in life.

Keep up the faith and good luck to the Vols,

Young woman's zest for life celebrated
By Millete Birhanemaskel, birhanemaskelm@knews.com
March 8, 2007

If it is true that life is not measured in years but rather in the impressions one leaves behind, Kristen Fischer lived a lifetime and then some.
She died Friday from complications related to cystic fibrosis.

She was 23 years old.

But it was hard to remember Kristen's time was so short from the memories shared at her funeral Tuesday at Bearden United Methodist Church.

She dressed up as queen of Sparta for Mardi Gras and balanced a Bible on her head as a half-joking reminder of being under God.

Lying in a hospital bed, she met University of Tennessee basketball coach Bruce Pearl. She lifted her respiratory mask and offered to say a prayer for him.

"If only we knew how to live as she died," said Kely Braswell, senior pastor at Antioch Community Church.

Kristen will be remembered as a person who didn't let problems stand in her way.

Cystic fibrosis causes mucus to build up and clog organs, particularly the lungs. But Kristen played trombone in the high school marching band.

She couldn't keep a beat but never let that prevent her from dancing.

When the disease did restrict her physically - last summer she couldn't go on a mission trip to Turkey - Kristen's heart remained unrestrained. She stayed behind in Knoxville and held a weekly "Turkish Delight" that included e-mailing prayers to the group abroad.

There was no room for sorrow in Kristen's eyes. Not even while she was in intensive care and fully aware that one morning she would not wake up.

Her uncle, Martin Fischer, said Kristen told her family: "If I wake up, I'll see you. If I don't, I'll see Christ. Either way, I win."

Kristen is survived by her parents, Ted and Elizabeth Fischer of Oak Ridge; two brothers, Neal and Scot; and several extended family members and friends.
