I was on birth control from Dec 05- June 06. When I first got off My periods were pretty regular. Now they are so random. For example I started today... I just got off last saturday!!!! This is rediculous. Its like every week or 2 I am starting. I go to my ob/gyn on the 2nd of jan. I would go back on birth control , but I can't because of the lumps that they found. Does this happen to anyone else?

my 1st period (age 13, 12 years ago) lasted for over 24 days. stopped for about 20 days, then came back for 20 + days. i was severly anemic.

from age 13 on I was on birth control until about age 19 when my periods stopped all together. this can happen when one is on the pill for many many years, but my CF doc wanted to make sure it wasn't related to CF things (some CFers lose their period all together). Period came back after I got off the pill, but it lasted for 20+ days ago.

So now I'm back. No clue if my long periods are CF related or not. But boy are they irregular!

It's a survival mechanism.

If your body is so sick that you're barely surviving, your body is going to ensure that it doesn't get itself into a tough situation like pregnancy.

So you're right - if you don't have any uterus lininng to shed (aka have a period), then you can't get pregnant because the embryo needs to implant itself into the lining of the uterus.

Some women w/cf stop having periods because of low BMI (body max index - weight relative to height) or weighing too little. As sakasuka said, it is the body's way of taking care of itself. If the body cannot nourish itself, then it cannot nourish a baby too. Low weight causes hormones to become unbalanced and without certain hormones, you cannot ovulate. If you don't ovulate, there is no egg to fertilize (which creates an embryo). Also, those hormones are needed to build the lining in the uterus that would nourish the baby through pregnancy, which is what you shed each month with your period.

When you are on birth control pills it provides hormones that your body may not be producing, which explains normal periods (or shedding of the lining) during that time.

Also, you said your period comes every 1 or 2 weeks. If it comes every 2 weeks and alternates bewteen heavy and light, you could be having mid-cylce spotting (the light periods) that some women get when they ovulate. The heavy would be a regular period (the shedding of the lining). If your cyles are short, that could still be ovulation spotting one and a half to two weeks after your last period. Everyone's cycles are different and each person's cycle can be a little off from month to month.

These are just some possibilties as to what might be happening. Your ob/gyn will be able to answer your questions more, just thought this might help in the mean time.
