Hello,

My doctor mentioned today that I may need a G-tube. If someone let me know how the procedure is done, and what it is like to have.

Well the procedure itself is done under general anethesia. Basically they run a camera down your throat to your stomach so they can see what they are doing from the inside. They create a hole in your abdomen through to your stomach and fill it with a plastic/rubber device that lets you run liquid directly into your stomach. The first week or two it will be sore and coughing will hurt quite a bit, that being said I was also able to walk around the day after my procedure.

I got mine in the sixth grade (I turn 23 next week) over spring break and didn't miss any school. For me it was important timing because I had been stuck in terms of weight for a long time. The doctors were concerned about my small size affecting my long term growth and puberty. Obviously that is not the issue for you but you will see benefits in your general well being, energy levels, and potentially in your lung function. I gained almost 30 pounds in about 4-5 weeks, so you can imagine the difference that makes.

Of course it does have its down sides just like everything else we deal with. It took me a long time to get over the shyness of people seeing it when I didn't have a shirt on. Although my guy friends at the time thought it was pretty cool! I also had a little problem with my first one not fitting correctly so it leaked like crazy. The second one had much less problems though it does leak very slowly throughout the day. Overall, it was definitely the right choice to have one put in and I'd seriously consider it if your doctor is mentioning it.

My two cents...

Exhaust every other avenue before getting a permanent fixture!!!!! (Increase your cal intake, drink the horrible thick icky high cal drinks, do NG feeds including bolus feeds during the day.....)

Sometimes a feeding tube doesn't give you the outcome you are hoping for and all you are left with is a hole in your gut as a reminder of what you shouldn't have done!!!

My boys got theirs three years ago and have had tremendous success! They were 9 and 13 at the time.

From a health point of view it was totally worth the surgery which they recovered from in a week or so. If they hadn't had their G-tubes last year when they were fighting the mycobacteria, I am convinced they wouldn't have survived. Josh still gets most of his calories overnight. Jesse who is a much better eater, only supplements on weekends.

From an emotional point of view, it took them much longer to recover. Being young teens, their sense of self esteem was shaky anyway. AFter the surgery, they really needed support via counseling and medication to get through the depression that resulted from being different.

Its not an easy decision, but for us it was the right one.
