Gaining weight from sugar soda?

Hi, everyone...

I was told when diagnosed with CFRD a couple of years ago to not drink sugar soda and switch to diet. I did this for awhile (hating every minute of it) and actually seemed to LOSE weight. Well, lately, I've been having a sugar soda every other day or so (while using insulin) and have actually gained 3 lbs! I haven't changed anything else is my diet, so don't think its attributable to any other source.

My question is this: Can people with CFRD actually absorb the sugar from sugar soda that causes weight gain?? I was under the understanding that the reason to give up sugar soda is cause it is processed so quickly that even an insulin chases probably won't keep it "with us". So, if I'm supposed to be dumping the sugar calories from sugar soda having CFRD, why on earth would I GAIN weight when I add it back into my diet??? I would assume, like everything else that has sugar in it, CFRD would make it extremely difficult to get the sugar and calories and KEEP them in the body to help us gain weight (this is why we LOSE weight when not on insulin with CFRD... cause our bodies don't keep the sugar and just "dump" it in our urine.) Is this correct? If so, why would I gain weight when adding something with NO fat content and just sugar calories?

Thanks for any information anyone can shed. I'm very excited at having gained 3 lbs! I have tried to gain this weight back since being diagnosed 2 years ago with CFRD!!!

I have CFRD. I'm not an expert, and not the best at maintaining the perfect level. I do drink sugar sodas, though not a regular thing.

I would guess that the best thing to do would to be to drink it with a meal, and not by itself. I've heard both: "chase it with insulin" and "balance your meals" - so I would guess the perfect answer lies somewhere in between.

I don't think it would be good practice to drink them all the time, by themselves. I also think it's stupid to drink diet soda's. This goes for any kind of concentrated sugar/candy. I think the invention of the new insulins gives us the freedom to eat the foods we couldn't 10 years ago. I say drink the soda, just add something with it.

I'm not an expert, either, but have been surrounded by family members with diabetes.
My basic understanding is that the insulin is insufficient, therefore all nutrients taken in that convert to sugar is not absorbed proberly, and stays in the bloodstream. by taking insulin, it supplies what the body's insulin doesn't do for the job of maintaining the sugar level in the blood.
Basically, if your sugar levels stay within the proper range, and you drink the 'leaded' stuff, I wouldn't see any problem with that.
However, bicarbonate drinks in general absorb a lot of calcium, so I'd recommend taking in more calcium, either as a supplement, or in foods that are high in calcium.
