Hi Jenn
I had my gallbladder out in 1999. I was experiencing really bad pain, just like you. I too am very afraid of surgery and not waking up. I had a wonderful surgeon and everything went just fine. I stayed in the hospital for 2 days. They sent me home with vicodin or perkaset(sp) to take at night for the pain. I really didn't have much pain. My husband took off a week from work to help with my son who was 4 at the time. So that really helped. I just really took it easy and recovered very quickly. I have 4 tiny scars. It was laproscopic sugery.
Don't worry!!!! Everything will be OK!!!! If you have any questions you can PM me!!! Good Luck!!

i was gonna say, be glad gall bladder surgery has come as far as it has. now they make just a tiny incision as i understand it. when my mom got it done 20-some years ago, it left her with a giant scar across her abdomen.

Hi Jenn, I had my gallbladder removed and it went fine. The scars are so tiny which is nice. Your stomach might be a little sore for a few days like any surgery, but everything heals nicely.
Good luck, you'll be fine!

OK touching on this topic. I remember as a teenage having terrible pain one night & then it didnt return until a few years ago. It doesnt happen on a regular basis so I dont know the connection. I do remember when I had my c section.....after my daughter was actually born & they were working on me....whatever they were doing (massaging from the ribcage down type thing I think) I thought I was going to die.....The same type pain returned 10 times worse. As a matter of fact the anesthesiologist (sp?) asked why I was crying because I had a spinal block & it shouldnt hurt that bad. They told me I would feel pressure so I ASSUMED this was part of it, but the Anesthesia doctor said no way & doped me up on anethsia which I fought because I didnt like the feeling & that part of my day was hell.......My chiropractor said that it could be connected to my middle back problems. It does seem that when my middle back is out (which happens often from coughing &/or congestion) that it can push on the gallbladder. My doctor said when I did address it at one time (which wasnt during active pain) that it could be anything....liver, pancrease, gallbladder etc. IN the last week I have had periodic attacks of this pain. I go to the Doctor tomorrow & actually hope it is acting up so I can find out what it is. My ??? actually is....has anyone found that it IS their gallbladder, but its not bad enough for surgery & if so then what? This brings me back to the Chiropractors statement of the back involvement. My back will be an issue as lung as I have CF lungs because I have to cough if nothing else during treatments.

Good Luck with your surgery. I am sure everything will be fine. I had my gallbladder out a few years ago and was terrified of not waking up too, but the procedure went fine and I woke up fine also. I actually went home the same day.

I remember having a hard time breathing afterwards, mainly because my stomach expands when I breathe and because of the incisions it can be painful. I also had a laproscopy, which left 3 visible scars on my stomach and 1 not so visible scar in my bellybutton. I am pretty sure they have to put some gas into your stomach to kind of inflate things so they can work easier, so you may be a little gassy after the procedure until all of the gas has worked its way out of your system.

If you cough alot usually, use a pillow to hold over your stomach when you cough in the days after the procedure. It helps to alleviate some of the pain.

Oh also I posted this on another post, but thought I would mention it here for you. When I was having my gallbladder attacks I tried altering my diet to see if it helped minimize the number (I started having them everyday/night). I noticed when I stopped drinking Soda or any carbonated beverage they stopped, so maybe you try experimenting with your diet to see if they will stop until you have surgery. I have heard that Fatty foods tend to contribute to the attacks, but that wasn't the case for me personally it was mainly sodas.

Good Luck and Take Care,
Lindsey

JBUCCA, You may recall I told you a lot about my gallbladder experience when you first came on with your abdominal pain story. I saw it when I heard it. I know it sucks to have this diagnosis but really its not a bad one. You will feel so much better once you have that rotten thing out. You won't have to change your diet and the recovery is quick - 1 week tops. My suggestions to you to help alleviate (and just good practice when getting surgury is) 1. meet the surgeon face-to-face (make sure you go to one that is referred by your gastro. person) If you don't like him/her go to a different one 2. Ask them how many times they've done this surgery. No need for you to be the ginnea pig - the number should be in the high hundreds or thousands because of the rule of FFF (Fat, Female, 40) tons of people are getting this operation done. 3. Make sure it is lapriscopically done (I think it's standard but make sure). 4. Do take some milk of magnesia before the operation - your pre-op sheet will probably mention something about this. Mine did. It was optional. I opted not to take it because I thought I wouldn't need it as I never get constipated - WRONG. I was constipated, without a BM for 3 days post op. until I took stool softener and milk of magnesia (I think that's what it's called). It did the trick and I'm embarrassed to be writing about this but it is my one biggest piece of advice to you and others that get gallbladder surgery. 4. Meet the anesthesialogist face-to-face. By doing this I got the real guy at my injection not the assistant that everyone else gets. He had a special fondness for CF patients that I find a lot of doc's have if you are willing to talk to them about it. Plus, it's more likely that you could die from this doc's mess up than the surgeon so ask questions away to this guy if you are nervous about this. I was really scared to go under because I had never been under. I had no problems with it. Worked great.

I have a picture of my gallbladder - personal message me if you want me to email it to you.

I've never had my gallbladder out, but I've had a handful of different surgeries. Good lung function does matter as far as surviving surgery. You'll be fine. Surgery can be scary, and I wouldn't tell you otherwise, but you'll come out of it A-OK.
