Get a home treadmill or not?

Hello!

OK, so I'm finally back on (though not very often I'll admit) after about 6 weeks of IV abx and a real headache of an infection with LOTS of "issues". But I digress....

My question is this:

My DH and I are talking seriously about just getting a home treadmill and gym equipment so we don't have to make the commute to a gym (takes probably 30 minutes drive time that we could be working out!) every day. I've been researching treadmills and weigtlifting equipment online (he does LOTS of heavy freeweights and machines at the gym so we need good ones) and am just curious if any of you who jog on a treadmill could recommend a good one? I specifially want a commercial-grade treadmill. I know the good ones are probably 5-6K so this is something we've been budgeting for. DH is very hard on treadmills and runs for hours at a high speed and incline, so its got to be able to take a beating. I have found schwinn and others like it for home use just wobble and overheat too easily.

I also feel at this point in my disease I want a treadmill at home so when I feel funky or am sick or have a PICC, infection, etc. I can just jump on at any time day or night and don't have to drive (sometimes meds make me sleepy) and also can feel more comfortable about infection protection as gyms are some of the germiest places known to man... LOL!

Anyway, just curious how those of you who workout at home feel about it? Are you just as motivated as working out at a gym? Maybe more so?

Thanks for the info! (sorry i didn't post in exercise... i honestly don't get many responses there, so i hope its ok to post here.)

I purchased one about 7-8 years ago for home for use during the winters and bad weather. I used to walk about 4-5 miles a day. I'm not one for going to gyms. Set aside an excercise room in the basement and had a tv hooked up, reading rack for magazines. I could exercise right then and there.

I ended up reading up on them on treadmilldoctor.com Sorta like the consumer reports for treadmills. I didn't want to spend a LOT of money and then not use it, so I got one listed as better value for under $2,000.
For the life of me I can't remember the brand -- want to say lifespan 1000i? -- obviously I haven't used it since this past winter

Hard to say what will motivate you more, I'm not a "gym type" at all, not that outgoing and am well able to motivate myself. My sister (also CF) on the other hand needs the gym and the social contacts there to keep her motivated.

A home treadmill is a great idea in any case, I have one too and it's a lot easier to get onto that then to prepare and drive to a gym. (that alone would have me break out a good sweat.) It's often even easier to get onto that then making a walk or run outside especially on bad days where you can just throw coughing fits on it and are able to sit down and have stuff handy.

Really do get some weightlifting equipment or atleast one or two good heavy dumbells though. Since I have my treadmill (couple of years) I've slowly started to figure out weightlifting works better for me then cardio. With an intense weightlifting routine I accomplish the same for my condition as with cardio, but also build muscle and strength which also helps lungfunction and motivation, because with cardio alone I hit a max fast that I can't seem to improve.
(With a piece of open floor and some dumbells you can train pretty much everything with some creativity, (fe. various squats for legs, various push ups instead of bench press, pulls ups on open stairs or a door, etc.) so save some money on weightlifting devices till you really find you need one.)

Goodluck!

I love my treadmill. It is a cheapie, so I won't bother you with the brandname, but I love that it folds up, too. I haven't been using it since my surgery, but before I was on it almost every day. I really dislike gyms, because I don't like people seeing me exercise or coughing out a lung. Good luck on your search.
