Great Strides letter writing

I've sent out several letters to local businesses, so far with just one response back. I'd like to put another batch in the mail tomorrow, but wanted to know if anyone felt like certain businesses were more responsive than others. Restaurants vs Insurance Agencies, for example.

Has anyone gotten very good (or very poor) responses from one particular industry?

Thanks!

Jenica,

I havent had "better responses" from any paticular business by name perse, but I try to stick the ones I use.

My homeowners insurance agent, my car insurance agent (which are the same in my case) surely they recognize my name and every year they donate, the employees usually chip in a few bucks each too and the company sends a $50-100 check. I give them business... they support our cause.

Same with the local grocer, I walk in and talk to the manager of the store and usually they see me in there all the time (especially now with my preggo cravings and before because Mark eats so darn much). I give them the letter, hand it to them personally and ask if maybe they can talk to corporate about donating on behalf of the company, something small, and also if they could put a copy up (I include 2 letters to some businesses) in the employee break room. Maybe mention it to their employees just once at a staff meeting. If everyone who worked at the store threw in a dollar, or even 50 cents, they could have about $50-100 to give to us.

I do the same thing at the local gas station and other businesses where I frequent at least a few times a year... that way sometimes they know/remember me and I usually take the letter into those businesses personally. Sure, it does take a bit more time, but you are more likely to get some support.

Just some ideas as to how I deal with the businesses... no particular industry for us though, just businesses we frequent.

Jenica,
I have not had much luck with large organizations, better luck with smaller ones that know the family or have a connection to CF. One large organization that supports CF is BJ's. Some organizations have matching programs where if you work for a certain company they will match their employeee's donation. For example, a friend of my mom's works for Verizon and made a donation to the CFF and Verzon matched her contribution. cool huh.

use businesses you frequent alot. There is a local hotel hear our house that is giving 50% off the hotel stay for the weekend of our Great Strides walk for all those walking for our team. I wrote them a letter saying how year after year my family stays at their hotels and just asked. They were very receptive so now family/friends who may not have thought or been able to afford to come to the walk can and be a part of the fundraising event. We live so far from a lot of our family so this is great for us.

Any business that has a connection to your family it's worth it to ask. Let them know it will provide good PR and you could advertise their business in some way.

We had horrible luck with businesses, with social clubs (VFW)... In fact we got no response whatsoever.

I usually compile a list of people I know from work -- businesses we deal with, people I know from committees, contractors.... I make sure I have a name on the letter -- A couple years ago a contractor I deal with who owns a LOT of apartment buildings, builds some homes, etc. called me up and said he has a nephew with CF in LA. He sent me a sizable donation and told me to remember him next time.

Schools are a good one. There are many clubs within schools that do different fundraising. Student counsel, key club. We received 900.00 for an high school one year from a "King of heart" fund raiser.
I have also received donations from police departments. Often they like to come out and participate.

For reference for next year ...

We just got another donation from a local insurance company. Out of the 6 letters I sent to insurance companies in our town, 5 have donated. I'm going to hit up the surrounding towns next year!
