Harmful Substances

I must say that my story is similar to Tim's... in that is was simply for the high. Granted I had the environmental factors cookin'.... older brother's who also used quite a variety of drugs.. but I was also a musician- which ultimately makes you make choices far sooner than I think anyone is really prepared for. I don't regret the things I've done, just thankful that I came through with some brain cells intact. Everyone's experience will be different, but I think that ultimately you wind up where you're supposed to be (if that makes sense). Anyway, that's just my two bits....-sleepwalk

Thanks for the responses. Really, I was surprised. I thought maybe I'd get the "I did it to fit in" type of responses. I'm glad that both of you no longer dabble w/ drugs & I assume you have no desire to do it anymore.I know w/ me, I was kind of the class clown type of person & I think I acted that way to overcompensate for CF...trying to make people forget that I was different, so they wouldn't treat me differently. In reality, they all knew I had CF, but probably didn't think of it hardly at all, (contrary to what I assumed).I have a daughter that is in elementary school. If you're still checking this post, what percentage of middle/high school kids would you guess experiment w/ drugs these days? Like I said before, I was sheltered, but really would guess that only about 10-20% of the students in my HS (in the 80's) did drugs. Maybe I'm way off there. Thanks in advance for any responses

i have to agree with tim and 'sleepwalk' also. i did drugs "smart" too, whatever that means, and i never felt addicted and it never effected my daily life at all. Some of my close friends weren't into it AT all so it definitely wasn't a fitting in type of thing. Most of the things I tried I sought out myself. I like to try everything, I have to admit I was never the type of person who "was just NOT interested in drugs"...I always had a curiosity. Drinking is the one thing I can't shake I guess...maybe because of its social acceptability, and i like it.With drugs though in fact, one of the things that probably made me LEAST likely to continue w/ them was the fact that in my circle of freinds, people, life, etc., drugs aren't very acceptable at all and if i was still into that i'd be a little embarrassed!

p.s., also, i think maybe like 20 percent in my high school tried or did drugs, and that is not counting smoking pot...i think almost everyone tries pot, probably 90 percent of high school people, and 50 percent probably smoke it socially or on a regular basis. i think, as far as drugs go, at least in my experience boys are more likely to try them then girls, but that is just where i grew up. .

I graduated in the early 90's. Weed and acid were ALL over the place. Late 90's, weed and extacy were ALL over the place. Now it's weed and cocaine. A LOT of cocaine. I'm in South Florida and I know of a couple schools where cocaine is VERY popular. And I heard it's impossible to find acid these days. And alcohol, which has always been around. I'd like to see some statistics on drug use in highschool, if anyone wants to look it up. And remember, anyone who is out there reading this and might be curious about drugs. Don't get started in them. They really are not worth it. Tim

I agree, although I did not have any serious problems with drugs, so many people are different, and I have seen people who did the same things as end up just doing more and more. Sometimes its not even as if they are drug addicts, its just the smoke so much pot or spend so much time partying, that they arent really DOING anything...they go to school or work but otherwise they are kind of at a standstill. Cocaine was and is easy to get when I was in high school, and so waws ecstacy. Just make sure your daughter is surrounded by a good group of friends, that is the most important thing I think.
