has anyone ever missed a monthly port flush??

ooooh noooo!!! i totally realized i missed a month of getting my port flushed :[
has anyone ever missed a month?
and if you have did your port still work?
aah im all nervous.
i gotta get to the dr. asap.

Yes and Yes, The longest I have gone between port flushes is 3 months (obviously not recommended) I do have pretty thin blood, so i may just be lucky, but even after 3 months I still got flash back...

My port has also been in for 11 years, so I must be doing something right!

Never missed port flush.. I would make an appt ASAP .. It may be fine , but you dont want to take chances with your port .. Let us know.. <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0"> joni

I had my port flushed with 6 weeks in between flushes. Sometimes even 7 or 8 I believe.

Just call your clinic and have it flushed, hope it flushes fine. Will keep my fingers crossed for you :)

I havent missed one, but a friend missed one by a couple weeks... it turns out, or so I have heard... I think that you can technically go 6-8 weeks, but just to be safe, once a month is best...

I have to set a reminder on my phone and/or my planner if I am in school to call my nurse, though she normally calls me first to get an appt. scheduled up.

I think you'll be fine this time, just try to not let it be an normal occurance... which I think you already know lol

ok I know that everyone is going to chastise me but understand I have made this decision for myself.

I have gone over a year between port flushes. And we have always gotten a good return and it is in perfect working order. It is almost 10 years old. I only access it now when I need it and don't do home flushes anymore.

This abstract may help ease your mind a bit even though they are referencing cancer patients who no longer use their ports (I'd say that patient subset is pretty similar to those of us w/CF who don't need frequent IVs).:

"Background: Little is known about proper interval periods between the flushings of totally implantable access ports after completion of chemotherapy. Manufacturer guidelines recommend flushing catheters every 4 weeks. Methods: This retrospective study examined whether flushing less than every 4 weeks conferred any benefit. Results: 349 totally implanted access ports were divided into four groups based on the different durations of the intervals between flushings. Sixteen (4.6%) complications were observed in the study population. Conclusion: Our results demonstrate that extending the flushing interval to up to 4 months remains medically safe and drastically reduces the costs."
