heartburn

i take zantac 150 (non prescription) everynight, and occasionally in the morning. i tend to get heartburn just as im going to bed. but when i feel it coming, i take a zantac if i havent in the past 12 hours, and pop 4 tums... .its helps, but then comes back for about an hour, until i can take another 4 tums. eventually the zantac starts helping....

i guess my questions are... does anyone get it as bad as me? and what can i do to help stop it and prevent it? (i know some people are going to say to change my diet- but thats not gonna happen, i can't afford it because im SUCH a picky eater)

thanks for your help!

I say go see your doctor and take this matter seriously. Make sure Zantac is enough for you. Perhaps ask your doctor what other drugs are available to you. It sounds like Zantac is not working. Can you take Zantac once a day to keep you at bay? That sounds like a better option. If you are getting heartburn before bedtime, it is wise not to eat two hours before you lie down. Getting a wedge pillow will help you at night. Try not to wear tight jeans or anything that is tight around the waist. I have found that one of my drugs can bring on acid reflux if I eat tomato and rich spicy foods along with it. I try to stay away from these types of foods late in the day and if I must have them, I eat small portions slowly.

Go to your doctor. I had it that bad a few months back, and it took my doctor trying 3 scripts to finally find the right med for me. Pantaloc works wonders - even better then Zantac I found, because Zantac wasn't working for me. Don't lie flat on your back either when you sleep - prop yourself up with a few pillows, and don't eat anything too spicy before bed until you've got this straightened out.

Prilosec (omeprozole) is over the counter in the US and it's active metabolite, Nexium (esomeprozole) is available by prescription. One is usually cheaper than the other depending on your insurance plan.</end quote></div>

I'm on Prilosec twice a day, and find that it does the trick, but I prefere Pantaloc (its just not available through my plan, so I have to stick with Prilosec.)

Can you get excessive indigestion from enzymes???

Joan</end quote></div>

That is an EXCELLENT point. I strongly believe that too many enzymes can contribute to additional problems with acid reflux. I was taking too many enzymes and depleted my magnesium levels and the result was heart burn. Too much acid can cause you not to digest properly. It is that balancing act that we try and achieve.

I am suffering from horrible heartburn right now, and since mine is pregnancy related, I am limited at what I can take. I will say that I have been alternating tums and papya enzyme (available at health foos stores). the papaya enzyme is nice as you can't really take too much (well, I am sure you could, but since it is a naturla food enzyme, you can take more than of an OTC med). I also have had to drink a big glass of milk before bed and then prop myself up on pillows. You might try the papya enzyme on top of the zantac and tums and see if that works, at least until you can get in and get an rx for somethin stronger - and I am interested in the idea that too much enzyme might cause it - is that something you can experiemtn with?

I believe the right balance of minerals can help with the acid reflux. It is all a balancing act. Too many healthy natural foods or vitamins can cause problems just the same.

I get heartburn really bad sometimes and all the prescription stuff does not work for me. I found that this suff called Alkabase, 1 teaspoon or tablespoon -depending on how bad it is, in hot water works like magic.
