Help New to CFRD

My 7 year old has symptoms of CFRD and they're having me check his blood glucose levels all day today for the first time. He's pretty nervous and I was wondering if there were any helpful hints for him to make this easier. I let him poke me last night....he seemed ok but I have to do him this morning. Thanks for your input.

We went through this with Josh in February. We checked blood for two weeks and then he was put on insulin injections. Turned out, his high blood sugar was from a medicine he was on. His levels are fine now.

He was very anxious about having the sticks, even though blood draws usually don't bother him. We tried it all different ways, different fingers, tops/sides, he does it/we do it. The best way for him was with us doing it, using side of the middle finger. It helps to put the finger on something firm and make sure the glucometer is pressed down firmly before releasing the needle. That way you'll make better contact and won't have to squeeze for blood. It hurts more later if you squeeze the blood out of the finger.

I hope it works out. Good luck.

Alternate the fingers so the same one doesnt get to sore & try to poke the side near the nail rather than the actual tip which is where the most nerve endings are. Good Luck!

Definitely what Melissa mentioned, try to stay to the outside of the fingers instead of the dead center of the tip - it is way more sensitive there. Also pinkies tend to be more sensitive - I know mine are anyhow.
There are usually settings on the needle thing that you use to prick your finger. I have mine set at 1.5 and it sticks me but usually I don't even feel it unless I hit a tender spot.

I don't know how to make the concept of him getting stuck any easier for him though. Just try to make it as least painful as possible and as each time passes it will become easier I guess. I know I hated it at fist because I just knew it was going to hurt real bad, but now it is nothing. Its uncomfortable and at times hurts but it is overall not bad.

I think your idea to let him do it to you was good. Maybe you could have him stick himself (I know I always liked to do it cause I knew what hurt and it was easier for me to do it then tell someone how) or tell him let me do your finger then you can do mine again - kind of thing. It might be uncomfy for you, but it may make him feel better.

Yeah the sticking is hard and I am 34 year old adult.. ha ha. I have to say you do get use to it and it will get easier. Hang in there and stay tough!
