Hemoptysis

So I went the whole summer pretty much without any instances of hemoptysis... then I stopped tobi for about 2 months (for a inhaled cipro study). One night I woke up coughing up blood, and I was diagnosed with the SWINE. I was ordered to start back on tobi. So essentially since then I've been coughing up blood once a week maybe. It subsides pretty quickly, but it's still bothersome.

*BTW I had to stop using inhaled tobramycin as it seemed to cause a previous case of bleeding, and when I stopped it, the bleeding stopped.*

Anyways because of these recent bleeds my doctor prescribed me prednisone 50mg for a week, and extended my oral cipro treatment for another month. Anyways, he says if the blood doesn't stop he's going to do a bronchosopy (sp?) to see what's going on down there.

I'm just wondering what are some other ways to treat hemoptysis. I remember reading something about taking more vitamin K... is there anything else?

I've also started hypertonic saline in this time, so it may be this irritating my lungs, but I like the clearness of my sinuses after as well as my lungs that I don't want to stop ahah. As I was typing this I actually had a little bleed while doing HTS, but it didn't last long.

Thoughts? Discuss lol.

The first thing the docs tell me to do when I start bleeding is to STOP HTS and Pulmozyme. Once blood is gone for 24 hours, I can resume HTS then Pulmozyme at a later date. This disease and its care are so frustrating. I've asked my doc about steroids when I'm bleeding. No way, he says because they hurt the heeling process. Your doc obviously disagrees. I wish CF docs would come to some consensus on this subject.

I wish I had a magic answer for you. It may take IVs to stop the bleeding.

Hi,

I've had alot of experience with hemoptysis, to the point of needing 3 bronchial artery emoblizations.

I was always told to stop chest pt too. Now I'm wondering about the wisdom of that, unless of course cups of blood are coming up. I remember begging them in the hospital to let me do CPT as I felt myself getting more and more congested (I think that was my 3rd day without it).

I finally started doing the CPT anyway and found that it didn't make any bit of difference to whether I would bleed or not. Lots of times, the bleeding would stop after a treatment. Maybe this would not hold true for others...who knows? Anyway, it is NOT a good idea just to leave blood in there to start an infection.

As to the actual bleeding....I stopped when I permanantly cut my Pulmozyme dose to once every 3 days instead of twice a day. It still works for me that way, but is not enough to irritate my lungs.

You might try googling cayenne pepper and bleeding. Sounds like they used iy for TB and put some in water and sipped it every few minutes or so to stop bleeding. I started to research it and never finished, but it was going to be my next course of action.

Keep searching....something will work for you. I knows it stinks so bad to bleed. I still have nightmares about it and I haven't had anything more than streaks for 3 years.
