Hemoptysis

I sometimes have streaks or a little worse and I wondered what your doctor suggests (if anything) that you do differently when having hemoptysis? I always forget to ask my doctor about this.

Possibly the amount of blood & how long it lasts determines if you adjust your normal routine???

I normally lay off the vest for a time or 2 and try not to do anything that makes me cough more then usual until the streaking stops. I would be curious to hear if any of you do something similar.

If I am having streaking I am told to stop my Pulmozyme. If I have pure blood I am told to stop my Vest & Pulmozyme. Both are stopped until I am 24 hours with no blood.

If 24 hours doesnt happen I contact them (or am suppose to) to see what to do next. I also bump my Vitamin K intake up for that 24 hours.

If its pure blood I drink ice water.

I guess it depends on whats is going on and how much blood i cough up. If i have just streaks i make no changes. I wont do the vest for 24 hours if i have full on hemoptysis. Since i dont sleep laying flat i dont have to make any changes there, but if i did lay flat to sleep i would not if i had hemoptysis for a night or two, just to be on the safe side.I hope it eases up on you Lynda.... <img src="i/expressions/heart.gif" border="0">

I've also been told to back off on the Pulmozyme when I've got hempotysis, but that's only when I've coughed pure liquid blood w/o sputum. When it's streaked I wait a couple of days before I take any meds that have steroids (such as Flovent or Advair).

Oddly enough, I almost always have a couple of spits of blood right before I'm due to switch back over the inhaled tobra. This time is no exception. I do tobra on odd months, and just last night I had a slight bleed. It went away though rather quickly.

The CF body is a truly a puzzlement at times. *sigh*
